Moving Application from ED to RD

Reverse question: do ED1/ED2 candidates sometimes change from ED to RD before the ED decision?

Yes, they do.
But at yield conscious schools, I expect that switching to RD will deal a severe blow to your acceptance chances.

This is a strategy point raised by a friend son’s who decided he now prefers three of his RD schools to his ED2 school. He didn’t want to cancel his ED2 application, but is considering switching to RD if one of his 2 EA schools takes him before the ED2 school. Wow, an intricate problem

Would assume each school sets it’s own protocol, some could not allow for this kind of switching, others could enable it and specify the window of time during which is doable. At any rate, would agree that the AO would be unlikely to admit such a candidate in RD

this makes no sense…he prefers RD schools over an ED2 school, but has 2 EA schools that he is waiting to hear from and would prefer over the ED2 school…so “he” applied ED2 with a binding contract/agreement to attend if accepted to a school that is at least #5 on his list? two EA schools he prefers and then 3 RD schools??? why did he ED2 in the first place??? “he” should pull the application and move on, hopefully one of the three RD schools “he” prefers is a safety and likely admit

And “he” should start his own thread rather than hijack this one.

Select schools are aware of this bait and switch approach, so most select EA schools time their decisions in conjunction with select ED2 schools decision dates.

Wishing “him” good luck.
