Moving Companies Across Country

I need help. I have a storage shed in CA and need to move the contents to Ohio. I have never done this. Any ideas? Lots of already professionally packed boxes and furniture. Shed is about 10 x 10. Thank you for any help.

A friend did this years ago. Arrange to have the shed opened for the moving company. Have someone inventory everything. (Friend had them pack all the boxes since she had just thrown the stuff in a mini-storage. Things were missing, but she didn’t have a record.) Some companies charge by weight and some charge by volume.
Good luck!

Google the company “PODS”. I’ve had success with them

Thank you. Much is boxed, professionally packed and then there is furniture. I think I will have to spend several weeks in CA making an inventory and thanks for the pods reminder!
I didn’t think I was going to get any feedback.

Are you doing this for reasons related to college?

I ask because my son is moving from on-campus graduate student housing in one part of California to an apartment in another part of the same state, and he wanted to use the PODS service. But he found out that PODS are prohibited on the campus where he is living. (I don’t know why.) If you are moving to campus housing, you may want to check to see whether PODS are OK.

Thanks, Marian, but no campus involved in this particular move.

I’ll ask S what company he’s using that the fed govt recommended & are paying for next time we chat. They picked up his stuff in LA & will deliver in VA.

Washington Post Article on moving long distance. http://www.washingtonpost.com/realestate/moving-without-tears/2011/05/27/AGOA14HH_story.html</a> Be sure to check BBB and anywhere else you can before using a company.

It seems to me that it would depend on how much you’re trying to move. If its not a full house-sized shipment, some moving companies won’t want it. They have minimum weights of 2,000 pounds, especially in the busiest moving times. If its just around 1,000 or so, there are companies that specialize in those types of shipments. I googled “Moving and Furniture shipping” when my D moved from TX to MI and found a few different options that were helpful.

Are you moving a car as well? I ask because right now I am trying to ship a car form East to west coast; and I am trying to get educated in the process of choosing a dependable auto shipper.

I recently did alot of research to help D move her stuff from a storage unit in Chicago (a little smaller than OP’s) to an apartment in California. After much online reading, I found movingscam.com to be the most helpful website.

I also learned that it was only about $300 more money to have a moving company (Planes, a sub-contractor with United Van Lines) pick up and move everything out there and included a personal delivery, help setting up the bed and re-assembling other furniture, and removal of many of the boxes. Totally worth it not to have to do any of the move ourselves, particularly since we had to drive a car cross country and take care of many other details. I compared the cost of this “full-service” type move against 3 different POD-type companies as well as the do-it-yourself route via Uhaul and Penske.

We also learned that at least one of the POD companies was prohibited from direct pick up in the city of Chicago. So the originating location and delivery location can each dictate some options as well.

Overall, we were happy with the move–particularly the ease of it. With all the moves we’ve done over the years ourselves, then subsequently with kids & college years, this was one of the best.
