Moving Companies

Going to the ultimate source for the best information–I need recommendations for movers for an out of state move who also do the packing up.

Any one have any particularly good or bad experiences with any movers? Any advice?

I will pass all of your wisdom on…

2 men and a truck are usually pretty good. The worst I have heard about them is that they are so short staffed they sometimes book the same two person team with two 8 hours moves in one day, so the guys get tired.

Boys…we use a terrific mover, but they are a local company affiliated with a large national company. It mighty help if you gave your geographic location…folks could then recommend movers they used.

In our experience the most important part of the job is packing. As thumper says, the national companies have local packers, and the loading and unloading is usually done by the truck driver who works for the moving company and the 1-3 people the driver hires as helpers.

We’ve had good experiences and bad experiences, and most of the problems have been with the packing.

Boys…I would suggest that you ask local friends who they would suggest. That is how we found our movers. Perhaps there is someone who knows someone who has already done a move and was happy with their mover.

Two men and a truck were not good for us. The fellow came to give an estimate, then never got back to us. When I called the company, I was told he “was no longer there.” Stuff happens.

I agree: It’s all local. Ask acquaintances near the area where the move will occur.

I just moved from Baltimore to Charleston and used the VA/MD-local Victory Van Corp., which is an Allied partner. I did my own packing, but they’ll do it for you, too. What I love about Allied is that it is corporate policy to number each and every item that goes on the truck, and then have YOU check it off as they unload it, so nothing is lost. The agent and driver/moving guys I had were all fantastic, too.

[Moving: How to Avoid Being Scammed by Moving Companies](http://www.movingscam.com/)
I find this to be a very helpful site. They have company ratings and a message board, too.

I also second movingscam.com. Lots of great advice from volunteers. One even went to check out the unloading of my son’s move to make sure the newly recommended company did a good job.

thank you for the link!

I would use Yelp for recommendations. I found our NYC mover through reading through reviews. Our mover was in the middle or a bit higher when it came to pricing, but their customer service was excellent and the movers were very polite. They moved our piano and didn’t break anything. I got 5 different estimates before I picked the one we worked with.

We used Delancey Street Movers. I was most concerned with the paintings but they were all intact. One of our many side tables had a damaged leg. That is the only damage I can recall.

I used ABF’s U-pack service for an Indianapolis to DC move…cheap, but hire someone to pack it as I DIYed and had a decent amount of damage
