What I can do to get rid of the books, small appliance, dinnerware, cooking tools, small furniture and decorative item?

I don’t want a garage sale. I already donated 12 large bags (contractor’s black plastic bag) of clothes and books to charities. What else I can do to get rid of these unwanted but still in very very good condition stuff? (if possible, I want some money back. I need some extra money for moving…). I tried Craigslist already but still have a lot in the house now.

You could try ebay, or go find a consignment store that will take your things. You could also wrap them up and have a white elephant going-away or housewarming party exchange.

You can list it under the “for sale>free” listing on Craigslist. List your address and leave it outside so people can just pick up what they want. I know people are leery of Craigslist, but I’ve done this several times and had great luck getting rid of lots of stuff. Be sure to post pics of the items for best results.

What I did…told my friends, co-workers-via an email-of a “Moving Garage Sale-EVERYTHING is FREE”…asked them to tell their friends-especially newly graduated high school/college seniors…That way, I felt like the people who came to my house were people I had a connection with, and I felt good knowing I was helping people who could use a leg up. In my case…if they wanted to give me money…I had checks made out to the local elementary PTA, and any cash I included in the envelope that I dropped off at the school.
I literally had everything taken! Down to the last coffee maker!
I hope this gives you the encouragement you seek. We still have NO regrets in down-sizing–and I still smile when I think of the people we helped.

Hire an estate sale team. They will sell everything, take a commission, and leave you with the rest of the $$ and you don’t do the work–they do.

“everything free” seems easier for me. I will try to put things people might want to pay for it on Craigslist and others for free.
Not sure if I can put all the stuff on driveway, need to ask HOA in advance.

Freecycle.org great way to get rid of stuff for free. They do not do “first come first served” as it wastes gas. They ask you pick someone (can be first, or best ask) and tell them to come get it by X date/time. If not, go to someone else on the list. I got rid of a LOT of stuff this way. YOu would be amazed at what people want or can use. (We remodeled and had a lot of old items.) I believe freecycle will let you do a free sale … as in put it out on tables like a garage sale, but it’s all free.

Be careful with “everything is free” posts on Craigslist. Some people take those words as a license to strip the place to its bones: remove doors, hardware, etc. In one case, and ad was posted as a mean practical joke - the homeowner could not stop Craigslisters from destroying her place.

If anythings usable, and you’ve got lots, get a tax deductible donation from Goodwill or other thrift stores.

If you have small items, there’s this cool site called Listia. You sell stuff for credits, and use them to ‘buy’ other items- no cah involved, but some good stuff avaliable.

If you’re at the end of the rope, Freecycle or Goodwill.
