Moving in Alone. Need Help

Vlines, I won’t know the exact day or time until I can ask my father when he comes home from work tomorrow morning.

I live about 45 mins away from you. I don’t know yet if I’ll need any help while in MD. This is a brand new territory, so I’m still sorting things out. I’ll contact you if I need anything. Thank you for being available.

I didn’t know I could store stuff in my room before move-in with my roommate’s help. That would be great.

Thank you so much for your son’s contact info. I’ll friend him on FB.

Ok so now it’s confession time…computers…yeah I am not good so I divert to M2ck or Bamagirls to figure out a list…We can all pm her our info. I have to tell you as a mom my heart goes out to grammargirl…if you need help navigating campus pm me and I will give you my DD’s cell number. She is on campus this summer taking a class and since you are not going through recruitment she can talk to you…

You could also theoretically sleep on the couch of your suite until you can technically move in to your own room. You wouldn’t yet have keys to your dorm so that might be an issue but if you can’t find a hotel, it may be your best option.

My advice would be to try to find friends at Bama Bound who have cars! Those are a huge help. Just meeting people in general is a huge help, too. As you can tell just from this thread, most people are very willing to help out others.

I plan to move into my apartment in Tuscaloosa Aug 13 and literally have nothing to do until classes begin, so if you need anything, feel free to message me on here.

Thanks, ahpimommy. I can almost guarantee I’ll need help navigating campus. In middle school, it literally took me a week to figure out that all of my classes were in the same hallway. Lol.

Reginaphalange, I love Friends! I own every season. One of my roommates has a car. I would prefer to sleep on the couch of my suite to staying in a hotel. Less hassle and cheaper.

Grammargirl, I will be there too, if you need help. I will also be moving into RCS-N the 10th for OA, so I should be there when you have to move in. I don’t think you will have a shortage of help hahaha.

My son did OA last year and one of his roommates (who wasn’t doing AA or OA) was allowed into the suite several days early since my son was already in.

There will be a Target night during Week of Welcome before classes start. After Target closes, they run buses from campus for a few hours & the store is open just for students. It’s a fun night and you can get a lot of your stuff there. The regular shopping shuttle runs on Sundays only: [Crimson Ride - Shopping Center Routes](http://crimsonride.ua.edu/pages/shopping-center-route.html) but even though D doesn’t have a car, she’s never been stuck for a ride if she’s needed one during the week. The Publix is almost on campus; you’ll be able to easily walk there.

Southwest lets you check 2 bags for free. You’re allowed one carry on and one personal item. See their baggage page for details: Baggage[/url”>Baggage Information | Southwest Airlines]Baggage

It looks like I’ll just be on campus on August 18th for D’s move-in, but I’ll be happy to help if I can!

GrammarGirl- I am so impressed with your motivation and perseverance with this process mostly on your own. I can tell already that you will thrive on campus. I see you have lots of offers, take them up on the offers and you will already have a lot of friends. I see my S also offered to help.
-Vlines, my S will also be alone in his suite and doing OA. I am guessing they will meet if they have not already. My S is in engineering, what is yours in?

vlines- YES :)

grammargirl-I’ve offered before to others on the board and I extend the offer to you. Please contact me if you need a ride from BHM to campus. I can “probably” schedule my trip through BHM to shuttle you (and stuff) to campus. It’s on my way. As the mom of a teenage daughter, I can’t imagine your level of anxiety right now. Sounds like your “CC mom and dads” and your fellow freshman class is willing to help you any way that we can.

Whoever is doing the list, pm for info.

I continue to be amazed with the help and generosity of the relative strangers on this board and at this school.

How can you read this thread and not love 'Bama?

Y’all are beautiful. Roll Tide!

Just thought of something else: make sure that if you’re going to do “ship to store” that there’s a store location in Tuscaloosa. A lot of people are surprised that there isn’t a Bed, Bath & Beyond in T-Town; there’s one in Birmingham but it would be tricky to coordinate that (but probably not impossible with the folks on this board ;)

I’m with Chardo and malanai.

Sorry I can’t offer help, OP, I’m nowhere near the area. I was lurking on this thread and I am just so impressed by everyone.

Good luck OP! I’m sure you’ll do just fine. And if any shenanigans go on with your flight getting cancelled or anything, you’ll have a good story to break the ice with your new acquaintances.

Okay, hope this info helps:
Here are just a few more pointers on getting through the airport easier.
1.) For Southwest have you father add the Early Bird Check-in to your ticket:
See info here:
What is EarlyBird Check-In?
EarlyBird Check-In is a low-cost option giving you the convenience of automatic check-in before our traditional 24-hour check-in. You’ll have the benefit of an early assigned boarding position, allowing you to board earlier. As an EarlyBird Check-In Customer, you will have a better opportunity to select your preferred seat and have earlier access to overhead bin storage for your carryon luggage. This affordable option automatically reserves for you the next best boarding position then available.

**This is still online check-in only earlier and with a small cost

2.) Use online check-in and print boarding passes before you get to the airport.

3.) You will still need to arrive at the airport two hours prior to your flight but use curbside check-in if available for your checked baggage, (the baggage handlers are usually more lenient about the weight of your bags, if you are a pound or two over) plan on tipping $5.00 per bag and have money in hand (so they see it). They will issue your baggage claim tickets and boarding passes right there (if you don’t have them already).

4.) Go through security immediately, you cannot bring any liquid beverages with you but you may purchase water and other beverages to bring on the plane after security.

5.) DO NOT put your wallet and ID in the plastic bin, you are allowed to hold your wallet (with money, credit cards) in your hand when passing through security.

6.) You MUST remove your computer from its case completely

7.) You will be either directed to a metal detector or to a Full Body Scanner. You do NOT have to go through the body scanner if you are directed to that, you can say that you want to “Opt Out”. However, be aware that at that point you will be asked to wait for a female security agent to take you aside and pat you down. They will do a thorough pat down at this point and even look in your waistband. It should not be offensive and they will not converse with you other than to instruct you on what they are doing. Personally, I take this option because I am concerned about the risks of the scanner. Nine times out of ten you will be sent through the metal detector. I am just giving you this info so you can be well informed in case it happens to you. At this point your items may or may not have gone through the X-ray unit so keep your eyes on your items.

8.) Be aware that they may also do a search of your carry on items. They can open your bags and search, take your items out, ask questions about the items, or run specialized cloths over the items to check for residues. Just be patient and answer their questions.

9.) I am sure that none of this advice will apply to you but I put it out there anyway. If you have never flown before in this highly sensitive security environment, there are some behaviors that you should be aware of. Never joke about the planes, the airports, the people and security…never mention words or phases such as bombs, terrorists or planes going down. People do get pulled off planes, get denied boarding, or get arrested for jokes such as these. Always act mature and reasonable even if the plane is delayed, or you get bumped. Never be curt or impatient with airline personnel, they will help you more if you are polite and reasonable.

10.) Once you are at the gate and hopefully have an “A” boarding pass, wait till your number is called, board the plane and stow your bags in the overhead as quickly as possible. This allows boarding to move swiftly. There are NO assigned seats on Southwest, so choose any seat that you like. You are not obligated to move once seated. Say you have the last aisle seat and someone who boards after you wants an aisle seat, you do not have to move unless you want to. If you move your seat do not move your overhead baggage (you may not get another storage area). You can keep your purse with you, but then it must be under the seat in front of you for takeoff/landing. You cannot have it in your lap.

11.) When told, your phone MUST be turned off (not placed in airplane mode).

12.) Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight.

13.) Once you have accomplished this one time, it will go very smoothly the next time you fly.

Good Luck, Roll Tide!!

Also from MD. DD and I fly out of BWI 8/15 and just the 2 of us in hotel til move in 18th. Renting a van and can help you out anyway you like. The shuttle is expensive in my opinion so if we can give you a ride even that would save you a lot. My daughter is active on the facebook group. Feel free to PM me.

Here are a few more things you may want to consider doing before you start packing.

Ask for refills to be called in at your pharmacy for any prescriptions you normally take or might need such as an inhaler, allergy meds, acne meds, etc. If you know you’ll need them have them filled. If not, you can have them transferred to Tuscaloosa if you need them later.

Be sure you have a valid insurance card for any policies you may need such as health and dental.

Have your contact lens prescription renewed and buy what you need. Pack your glasses also just in case.

Obtain a non-driver identification from your DMV since you don’t have a driver’s license. You may need this id later.

Register to vote if you are 18 or will be within 6 months.
Keep a copy of your voter registration with your important papers. You may need this at some point to prove id and residency.

Request absentee ballots from your Voter Registration Office. You can have it mailed to a P.O. Box on campus if you rent one or to your home address if you don’t have one.

If you had braces and wear a retainer, have it checked and be sure to pack it. You don’t want that expense again.

Purchase and pack any over the counter meds you use frequently or may need. You may not be allowed to purchase some of them in Tuscaloosa due to your age.

Obtain and make a list of important telephone numbers and emergency contacts in your hometown. Put them in your phone, on your computer, and a hard copy with your medicines so you won’t be fumbling for them if there is a true emergency on either end and your cell phone doesn’t work.

If you have a hair stylist back home, you may want to schedule an appointment for Thanksgiving Break, Christmas Break, or Spring Break if you plan to go home. Appointments go quickly for those times and it can make you feel like a new person when you go home to have your hair done before heading back to campus.

Register your phone for the Guardian program on campus on MyBama. Purchase a small umbrella and flashlight for your backpack and a don’t forget to put them in it.

Schedule any follow up appointments for when you will be at home on break for dental cleanings, retainer checks, etc. if you will need them because those times book quickly.

Scan a copy of any important documents such as birth certificate, etc.

Copy your student ID and leave the copy and any important information your parents might need in case you run into a problem that requires their help later (such as registering for classes if your registration time happens to fall when you are in class). It happens. It wouldn’t hurt to print out a copy of your schedule to leave with them so they don’t call you when you’re in class.

Provide your parents with the names and numbers of at least one of your roommates and one friend for use only in an emergency in case they are unable to reach you in an emergency situation.

Pack the important papers and medications in your carry on bag. Be sure you have your TB test and immunization form completed and with you.

Give your parents kisses and hugs…they’re really going to miss you and I cannot imagine the stress for you and for them. We’ll help you any way we can.

Practice saying ya’ll and Roll Tide. You’ll be just fine.

Has anyone started a list for her? If not, I’ll be happy to compile any information ya’ll would like to share with her. Let me know through PM.

We are moving my daughter in week of 6 Aug – in prep for AA. She will be off campus and will have a car, and AA wraps up pretty much by the time you visit I think. We will send a PM with her Facebook info. It’s amazing seeing all the support offered, but if there is anything needed, I’m sure she wouldn’t mind helping.

grammargirl… if you need anything when you arrive in birmingham… let me know…i can have my son help you on that side. he is at uab and about 20 minutes from the airport.

Grammargirl, you’d better prepare yourself 'cause there’s a whole 'lotta love and TLC coming your way the minute you step off that plane! There is nothing more heartwarming than to see our UA family come together like this to welcome a new student. This is who we are…we are UA and so are you, grammargirl.

The list is coming along nicely and as soon as I think I’ve heard from everyone I’ll send it your way. You can all thank Ahpimommy and anyone else who suggested this list.

Roll Tide! Have a great day everyone! Roll Tide!:)

Grammargirl, another idea is to check in with the local recruiter. She may know of someone else that is driving down, and if you are lucky, they may have a small corner of their car to put something in for you! Also, are you going to the MAryland going away party? You may meet someone there that can help too!
