Moving in day - I'm checking the weather

It now falls within the 10 day forecast!

NYC 82 brilliant sunshine - their words not mine.

And the whole welcome week before school starts looks not too hot, upper 70s and low 80’s, maybe some showers. That’s good news because my S dorm room is not air conditioned.

If your move-in day does not involve evacuation for Hurricane Katrina, I think you can count yourself blessed :).

Move-in day for S is Sunday in Houston. I sat and watched cable news all afternoon and saw the unbelievable flooding  I hope the water recedes by Saturday when we fly in and have to drive a rental car from the airport to the hotel. We also have to make the BB&B and Target run on Saturday to pick up a bunch of stuff he’s going to need. Rice closed the roads on campus for several hours today but they’re reopened tonight, so I hope that bodes well for the weekend.

Patsmom, we’re watching too. Though reports from friend who is there is all ok. We have the same BB&B and Target runs on Saturday. Looks like we will sneak in between Erin and Dean, though. Talk of Dean getting there Tuesday. Boots a must :)

Around the Rice U campus, the biggest threat is Bray’s Bayou, and it takes much more rain than occured today to make it flood over its banks. It doesn’t take much to flood the streets in Houston, but usually it recedes pretty quickly after the rain stops. The biggest inconvenience from all the rain they’ve had this summer will be the horrible mosquito problem (they’re always bad, but with record rain falls this summer, it will be awful).

Just for kicks and in case you don’t know, just a reminder to all the ‘inquiring minds’ out there: the correct pronunciation for Bayou in the Greater Houston area is “bi-oo” NOT “bi-oh”
You know what they say: …When in Rome…!!

I keep reading this tip about bringing boots - could someone clue me in on what kind of boots you mean (for a boy)? Here in FL we get tons of rain, too, but nobody wears boots. I wouldn’t even know what to look for:confused: . I mentioned boots to S and he rolled his eyes at me. I think he’d rather have wet feet.

Did any of you Rice parents receive the emergency system phone call yesterday afternoon concerning the flooding? I was quite impressed with the system they now have in place to alert all emergency contacts of what is going on.

101 in Knoxville last night at 8:30. On the bright side, my daughter was at band camp so she could move into her dorm two days early. Very easy, quick move-in compared to official move-in day tomorrow. People are being forewarned to fully expect the potential for sitting in a line of cars for up to 8 hours to unload. Thank God for band camp!

Hi patsmom and peariceparent!
Yup- got that automated “don’t drive on campus” phonecall. Then I called my s who said I had interrupted his listening to the same message. He was surprised that I’d gotten the msg before him! My s is flying out of Houston this Sat morning and back in on Weds night-- both show dreadful weather conditions, with one storm just leaving, and one arriving!! AGGGHH!! Are you flying or driving, patsmom? My s’s gf is flying in from Ft. Lauderdale to Houston Sat am, as they are supposed to be going on (flying) to Vegas for a few days (its our 21st bday present to him). Not sure what will happen with all their plans! I will keep my fingers crossed! I haven’t heard of any kids wearing BOOTS on campus, and they are supposed to have cutting edge drainage on campus (with all the engineers there, you’d expect they could do that!), but there is also a lot of construction going on, so who knows. Good luck to you all!!

And jmmom-
You are absolutely right-- nothing tops the awful situation with Katrina (**except maybe a bad haircut!! ). Hope you are all well past the Katrina nightmare!

We also had a Katrina move-in and abrupt move-out the same day.

This year, S is heading to New Orleans alone and hopes to leave 8/23. Now this year, it’s Dean.

I’ll always keep an especially close eye on the weather after having to live through the evacuation, semester-long displacement, and subsequent return to campus. And the impact on us was relatively minor in comparison to so many who suffered so much.

I’ll be worrying like crazy every hurricane season until S no longer lives in New Orleans. He’ll probably end up there permanently just to spite me :)

^true one of my old family friends(our mothers had a shared personal trainer that went to who’s ever house it was at that week every saturday he would come and my sister’s would babysit the young ones) was in sophmore yr he got in and barely unpacked when he was told to evacuate he just packed a weekend bag and said oh i will probably be back in a few days i don’t think he originally went home(he lives in NY) until after he realized im not going back anytime soon him and my neighbor a fellow sophmore at tulane who graduated from the same school(there was 3 students who went to tulane from the school)went to hofstra(which is local) and stayed home…and got in News 12…about the transition he came back spring semester and everything he left was in place exactly where he left it(no joke)

I know it goes with the territory as I grew up along the Gulf Coast - it seemed like every year, right about the time school started, there were always a few days that we’d wake up in the morning and check the weather to see if the latest hurricane/tropical storm was heading our way, because that would mean school was canceled.

Although I don’t live there anymore, I still have lots of family all along the Texas coast - two years ago as I was driving back from dropping off D1 at Syracuse, I spent almost the whole trip listening to the XM radio MSN station giving news updates on Katrina. Since next week will include one drive to Syracuse, and another to and from Allentown, PA, from the looks of the activity in the Gulf, I expect I’ll be tuned into that same radio station wondering how my relatives are holding out.

P.S. And… it drives my Connecticut-born husband crazy - he just doesn’t get it.

Just checking in to say we arrived in Houston this morning to a sunshiney dry
(but humid) day. We were able to pick up our Pack and Ship stuff from BB&B and we got to Target to pick up the last minute items for tomorrow’s move-in. I hope that the rain holds off tomorrow morning until the kids get moved in, at least. Then we’re outta here first thing Monday morning before Hurricane Dean gets here!

Glad all went smoothly, patsmom. My s and his gf connected smoothly at Bush and are now vacationing in Vegas. We are hoping they will be able to get back to Houston on Weds, with Hurricane Dean heading their way! BTW, did you need those silly boots?

^^ LOL Jym - no boots needed! But H and I did bring an extra pair of shoes apiece in case we had to wade through puddles!
