Moving in to an apartment! (NYC)

Hi everyone, I know there have been a few threads on this before, but I didn’t want to dig them up out of the grave.

I am getting ready to move in to my apartment in 2 weeks, and I had a few questions that might be NYC specific or not. I’ve ordered some furniture that will arrive shortly after I do. My mom keeps telling to ask if there are delivery fees associated with the apartment complex (not the delivery company) or if I need to rent elevator time to get the stuff upstairs. Is she crazy? Do such things exist? haha

I’m also getting a list together of minor things that I’ll need when I arrive that I might forget about. If any current students (or anyone) has advice on something critical that they forgot when they moved in, I’d really appreciate hearing about it.

(for instance: toolkit, surge protector, plunger etc.)

Thanks

Your mom is not crazy! (Hard to believe, I know.)

At the very least you’ll need to alert the doorman that you’re expecting the deliveries and ensure that someone is available to give the delivery people access to the freight elevator or to hang those padded thingies on the walls of one of the regular elevators.

I wouldn’t bother with a toolkit unless your furniture is the kind you have to assemble. You’ll almost certainly need some extensiorn cords for lamps, clock radio, and such. If your apartment building is “older” expect the outlets to be in inconvenient locations.

The number one thing almost everyone has to run out for after moving in? Toilet Paper.
