Any advice on what school district to move into?

I have relatives who will probably be moving to the Cleveland area next summer (2012). They’ve got two boys - 11 and 9 years old (the summer they move they will be entering 6th grade and 3rd grade). They’re normal, bright kids who are avid readers and do normal activities (boy scouts, swim team, other sports). I don’t think sports will ever be more than an activity for them - they don’t need to find the best football team that college coaches scout or anything like that.

This family likes the typical suburban neighborhood, and for them that means no dandelions in the yards, neighborhood rules about parking trailers in the driveway, etc. I believe work will be in the Seven Hills, OH area, so the south side of Cleveland. They’ll probably want to spend $250,000-300,000 on a house.

They’re mostly looking for advice on what schools to search out - best public high school and what elementary and middles schools that feed into it are best.

Would they be interested in a Catholic school? I’ve met a lot of kids from the Jesuit high school in the Cleveland area, and I’m sure there’s a feeder grammar school for it. I highly recommend a Jesuit high school education. And you don’t have to be Catholic. You will get a great education and will learn the importance of being Men for Others. These kids have come down every year since Katrina, 2005, to work in our community. I’ve not only met with them around school, but also attended many Triple A baseball games with them. Nicest kids and very caring faculty members.

Strong systems to the east include Hudson and to the west, Strongsville and Westlake. A bit further west in eastern Lorain County are Avon and Avon Lake. These two, along with Amherst are probobly the top three systems in Lorain County. Avon is one of the three fastest growing communities in Ohio and they have done a great job keeping their schools growing although with recent state funding cuts, it has become more difficult. That said, all of the more affluent suburban community school districts have lost state funding and have had to tighten their belts. You can find a wide range of nice homes in the $250 - $300,000 range in those communities. You can also spend more if you want more house.

There are also some excellent private schools in the greater Cleveland area including the private independent schools (Western Reserve, Lake Ridge), and the Catholic high schools (Walsh Jesuit, St. Ignatius).

Google Cleveland Magazine. They do a best suburbs and best schools review each year. You may find some useful information there. If you have more quesitons, feel free to send me a PM.

Strongsville is further southwest of Seven Hills, Hudson is even farther southeast. If you live in either of these communities, there is no easy access to Seven Hills only local roads. If you take express ways it is very convoluted. (71N-480E-77S from Strongsville) Westlake (271N-480W-77S from Hudson) is too far north although opposite direction of commute traffic.

IMHO, if you live in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Independence, or North Royalton you would be minutes from your work (depending on where it is in Seven Hills) and still have an excellent school system. You will be able to get houses in your price range. Brecksville taxes are a bit higher than the rest.
