Ko Olina is a very nice place to stay. Pats at Punaluu is another, lower priced place (condo) that is also on the water and has VRBO listings. I have a friend who owns units there and rents them out and allows her guests to use her kayaks. The units can sleep quite a few people.
Depends on when the trip is planned and where you’ve been before. Chicago is a great city to visit, especially if you are from either coast and have no excuses to visit the Midwest. There are typically weekend rates for hotels and taking the train in from the suburbs can be done if you don’t rent cars. So many excellent museums, Michigan Ave, the lakefront…
You need to figure out overall costs for the family. Transportation costs and time can vary greatly. You level of luxury also matters. We tend to do lesser lodgings when we do not plan on spending more than sleeping time in a hotel. But- the resort can be the experience. I would not want to spend too many hours travelling unless I had a week at my destination.
Do you want a resort type, a sightseeing or a museum type of experience? Is it most important for family to have uninterrupted time together or do something not done before or wouldn’t do without a group?
I know it’s not that far from home…and might be too costly…but what about a few nights at the Hotel Del Coronado? Gorgeous location…and plenty to do in San Diego right over the bridge.
Maybe you could add to your cost per night because travel would be less for some of you.
I would LOVE to celebrate my next milestone birthday there.
Thumper the Del is seriously on the list. My parents and I went there for years. And when we had our children we went with my parent]s there. And then we started to go to Hawaii… Yes, we have to up the budget to go there…sports are high on our list.the cultural vacation later. Tennis and golf and raising of the arm for some drinks. We will be in Ny for a week early summer.
So, that will our cultural vacation.
I think you should go to someplace like the Del but not the Del because you said you’ve been there.

If you want sports like golf, tennis, how about the area around Charleston SC? Places like Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms. You could find a super nice house to rent on or near the beach or check out some resorts. In addition to nice beaches, golf and tennis, the areas are a very easy drive from Charleston for world class dining both high end for a celebratory dinner and more modestly priced as well. There are plenty of places do some nature trails. Culturally, it would be a change of pace from LA as well.
My idea of a group family vacation would be a quintessential beachfront house, maybe three bedrooms and three bathrooms for everyone? There are some nice places on the west coast of Florida (Siesta Key comes to mind) where you can easily rent for less than $1000/night in April.
If you aren’t opposed to Mexico, you could rent a gorgeous waterfront home on Isla Mujeres with your own butler, housekeeper and cook, a beautiful private pool, and virtually anything else you wanted for $1000/day.
