Can I break into the petroleum engineering jobs with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering?

Only Exxon shows that major on their requirements list… all others require other oil experience with a degree like this(not the big 3 and PetroE)

Are you specifically wanting to get into drilling and extraction (petroleum engineering) or just to get into oil and gas? Because there are a whole heck of a lot of other jobs in oil than just petroleum engineering.

For what it’s worth though, I’m a materials engineer and will be working for a refinery come this July.

I know corrosion science/engineering is a huge field for petroleum companies, and you can certainly do that sort of stuff with a MSE degree. However, it’ll probably have a very different career track and pay scale versus the PetE guys out in the field.
