Hi, so i have to SIR in a few days, and I’ve boiled it down to Mt. Holyoke and Seton Hall. I have applied as a Biology major with a minor in Chemistry in both of them, and I intend to go into pre-med.
I’ve heard that SHU has a better biology program, and it even has its own residency program and a DO program.
But Mt. Holyoke seems to have better quality, and has better facilities and more research opportunities.
Who in the world told you that Seton Hall has a better Biology program than Mount Holyoke? o_O!!!
MHC is one of the premier colleges in the country. The overall education is not in the same league (not on the same continent) as Seton Hall - the facilities, resources, networking opportunities, alumnae network, class sizes, peer quality, just don’t compare.
If the financial aid package is doable, go to MHC you won’t regret it.
Some objective data:
Seton Hall, average GPA of admitted students: 3.45… MHC: 3.66 and with a very different courseload (ie. AP/Honors are the norm to get into MHC)
Seton Hall, average SAT (CR+M+W): 1660 MHC: 1990
%who score 700+ on SAT M: SH 4% / MHC: 33%
% who scored 700+ on SAT CR: SH 3% / MHC: 31%
% students who were in the top 10% of their high school class
Seton Hall: 35%
MHC: 57%
Average ACT: SH 25, MHC 29
Bottom 25% ACT threshold: SH 22 MHC 27 (in other words, the average Seton Hall student wouldn’t even make the bottom 25% at MHC)
TOp 25% threshold: SH 27, MHC 31 (in other words, the top 25% students at Seton Hall are at the level of the bottom 25% at MHC)
% students graduating in 4 years
Seton Hall: 50%
MHC: 76%
Unless you have some aversion to the all-female aspect of the school, MYOS1634 is correct - MHC is a top LAC providing a rich undergraduate education and great opportunities for research (as well as a very strong biology program). Moreover, you will have access to the resources of the 5-college consortium. I don’t think Seton Hall is in the same league in terms of academics.
I can’t imagine that SHU is better than MHC in any disipline. Assuming you can afford both and don’t mind the all-women aspect, I’d go to MHC in a heartbeat.
@zsalman15 - Did you make a typo in your original post?
Seton Hall University in New Jersey does not yet have a medical school - just an agreement to start one in the near future.
Seton Hill University in Greensburg, PA does have a cooperative arrangement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine that can guarantee direct admission to the D.O. program.
If you are trying to choose between MHC and SHU-LECOM the issues have to do with how committed you are to studying medicine, and what the financial aid packages for MHC and for the SHU portion of the direct admission program look like. If both of those are equally affordable, and you know for dead certain that you want medicine, than take the SHU-LECOM offer and don’t look back. You will save yourself a colossal headache 3 or four years from now at med school application time.
If you aren’t certain about med school, and the costs are equivalent, then go to MHC.
