Hello, I’m a hs senior whose going mt sac for fall 2011, My education goal is to transfer with honor program. I was accepted into UCI and UCDavis, thus I’m quite confident about my ability to do well in mt sac. I have taken the writing placement test at mt sac and was placed into a lower class, which would prohibit me from taking the most uc transferable classes for my major, biology, and prevent me from being eligible for honors program. When I asked my teacher for help, the teacher said I can possible get into Eng 1A with a letter of recommendation, since I’m currently taking the expository writing course, which is written by csu to prepare students for CSU freshmen english. I’m not sure if my teacher’s letter of recommendation could solve my problem, and I’m afraid that if i don’t meet the requirement soon I would waste my first year at mt sac taking irrelevant classes, which don’t prepare me for transfer. Does any one know if there are other ways to get into the English 1 A classes and honors program without the required score on the placement test? Please help. Thank you.

i think there are only a few ways…
- retaking the test
- petition the test
- place out of the test with AP scores

thats all i know of.
you could try what ur teacher said with the letter of rec, its worth a shot.
but even if you dont get into ENG 1A, you arent that much behind because you still need to do GE’s in order to transfer, so you can use that semester to complete some GEs. and if you find them too easy, take on more units that are transferable :)

Its gonna be hard unless you have AP. Try retaking it but it usually doesnt change. Unless you have 700+ SAT reading and writing, you’ll get into Eng1A. They grade it hardcore. Take Eng68 and do honors in spring.

To to UCI man… you’re gonna regret it…

Honors doesnt mean **** except for UCLA and UCB and it doesnt even give you that much of an edge for impacted majors like bio.

@CaliforniaDude, I do not know how much effort you put into writing your post to open this thread but to be honest with you. it contains numerous grammatical, syntax, punctuation and capitalization errors. Your writing skills do not appear to be up to the standards that would be expected of a UC or CSU freshman. Good writing skills are essential to doing well in college level courses, no matter what your major is, and in the long run it would better serve you if you started in the English course you tested into and built a strong foundation in English composition early in your college career.

Thanks for the advises. I will retake the test, then turn in the letter of rec for petition if needed.

Same thing happened to me sort of except I got placed into a lower level math course. My AP English score exempted me from the test so I got to skip freshman English. But I would petition the score and tell them your situation, and then get a letter of rec. At least, that’s what I’m gonna do about my math score. Also, if you have a good grade in the class you could bring that up to help your case.

Are you retaking the test and then petition? I’m not sure about retaking the test, since grader might butcher my score again. I might just petition w/o retaking the test. if possible, could you message me how your petition process went. I plan to petition sometime next week.
