Mt. Sac to UC Berkeley

Hello, I’m currently a graduating senior in the 626 area. My high school GPA was low due to some family issues in my junior and senior year, so I’ve decided to take 2010 Summer + 2010 Full year at Mt. Sac.
After the Summer/Year at Sac I’d like to transfer to Berkeley going for a double Major in Economics and Something on the plane of International Relations. What classes are advisable to take in the time period and is it possible to complete 60 UC transferable credits within that time period? Thanks.

transferring in 1 year is extremely difficult unless you have AP credits.

you need to complete all of IGETC and major pre-reqs.

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) will tell you all the major pre-req classes you need.
classes on the left are ones at cal and the ones on the right are the equivalent offered at mtsac.

http://www.mtsac.edu/catalog/2009/section09.pdf

on pg 8/9 is IGETC

also be sure to join honors if you plan to go to cal.
but dont plan dont transferring in a year unless you want to torture yourself.

Ok so I’ve figured that with all my AP credits, a year transfer will be pretty possible for me. I have passing scores in the following:
Language
Literature
Economics:Macro
Economics:Micro (Probably, took it on a whim)
US Government (Also taken on a whim)
European History

Now, I am aware that I can only receive credits at Berkeley for one of the English tests.
Saying that, my cumulative credit amount without the whim courses is 18.6
Now with those courses out of the way, counseling practically booked up, and a confusing system, I’m unaware of which classes I shouldn’t enroll in at Sac due to their equivalent exemption due to AP. This also means that if I can get 12 or more credits during the summer, I should be able to do Berkeley after my full freshman year?

okay, you cannot do 12 units in the summer. i believe full time is 4 units and max is 7 units UNLESS you get permission from a counselor. and even if you did, 12 units is unrealistic during the summer. 12 units is 3, 4 unit classes or 4, 3 unit classes or a mix. too many to handle for anyone in a 6 week period. i highly doubt you can take 12 but def try to find out if u can. and if you do, make sure you are aware of the drop dates just in case you cant handle it.

the classes you dont need to take anymore because of AP would probably be best answered by linda diaz at the honors center. i wish i could tell you, but i honestly dont know anything about AP credits and i dont want to misinform you. i think AAWW000 in the official thread said he placed innto 68 but went to eng 1A because of AP credits, but you said they dont work. so im even mroe confused haha.

if you have 18 credits already, you only need 42-52 units which is easily attainable. BUT depending on your major, this could mean another year. if your major is impacted then you will have to take ALL major pre-reqs, and for some majors the list is quite lengthy. along with having ALL pre-reqs you have to also finish IGETC. IGETC itself is 60 units.

so guesstimate 60 units IGETC + Major Prereqs = X units needed to transfer.
assuming you are a beast and take 20+ units during fall/spring thats 40+ and take 7-9 units during summer/winter thats 14-18 units. total of 54-64 units.

be aware of your major pre-reqs so that way you can eliminate areas of IGETC while completing major pre-reqs at the same time.
for example, im a psych major and PSYCH 1A is a major pre-req but is also a class i need for IGETC. so 1 major pre-req down and one area of IGETC down. the key to transferring out within a year is knowing what classes to take and being able to get them.

i REALLY advise you to do some sort of student government position. you will get priority registration.

Dainese pretty muched summed it up well. I can add some more information though, because I’m an Economics major as well. I am assuming you are applying as Econ.

First let me be honest and say, if I were you, I would stay at Mt Sac for 2 years and almost guarantee my position at Berkeley or UCLA with good grades rather than do a one year transfer and risk not getting in. But that’s just me.

So for Econ, the classes you need in addition to IGETC are:

Macro Econ
Micro Econ
English 1C
Calculus 180
Calculus 181

You should have these classes done by end of fall. So looks like you got the two Econ classes covered. But the thing is, you don’t have an actual grade for your Econ classes, you just have an AP passing score. That MIGHT be a negative when Berkeley looks at ur application, considering you don’t have actual grades for your MAJOR prerequisites. So I would take the Econ classes again at Mt Sac. It’ll be easy for you anyways. Your AP English and AP US Government does help cover English 1A and one of the humanities requirement, respectively.

As for the IGETC (General Ed requirements), there are 5 areas you need to cover. The IGETC List is on page 8 and 9 on this link:

http://www.mtsac.edu/catalog/2009/section09.pdf

Your schedule should look something like this(please confirm with a counselor though):

Summer 2010 (7 units): Calculus 180, Econ 1A
Fall 2010 (17 units): Calculus 181, English 1C, ECON 1B, a Biological Science course WITH LAB
Winter 2011 (3 units): 2 courses of your choice.
Spring 2011 (16 units): a Physical Science course, a social science course , and three more courses of your choice.

And this is if you can even get the courses I listed above. You better try to get these classes at MULTIPLE colleges, not just Mt Sac.

thanks again AA.

and you should take 2 years if possible.

if you can manage 1 year easily then do so.
my friend did and she got accepted to USC/UCB/UCLA but rejected from UCI lol. crazy anteaters.

shes going to USC. represent!

judging from the schedule that AA wrote, i am assuming you will be at SAC for more than 1 year. nearly ALL of those classes in summer/fall are going to be full and extremely hard for a freshman to get. if i were you, make friends in the honors center QUICK, and use their registration dates to hold classes for u ;)

unfortunately i cant because i dont qualify for math 180 haha and those that do probably already took it. so keep searchin and gl!

Thanks for the helpful information. I know it’s a little crazy, but I’m fairly confident I’ll be able to get all the prereqs within one years time, possibly including Summer of 2011 and then going into Berkeley. My registration for summer isn’t until June 17th, so I most likely won’t be able to pick up a math. I’m hoping to grab SOC 1 and Phil 5 which are both online and then Anat 10A/Chinese 1.
I guess at this point it’s all contingent on class availability.

Edit: My ideal goal would actually be a double major in International Relations and Economics, not sure how that really mixes it up.

One thing, it is recommended that you finish your major prerequisites by the end of fall, that’s why I tried to get in the Econ’s and Math 180 and 181 before spring. But that’s just recommended, so its your call.

Do I need to take economics as I have a passing score in Macro and most likely Micro?

Oh well, scratch the previous post. Apparently you should most definitely not take courses if they are exempted in the IGETC category. So looks like I have to avoid a lot of the classes that I actually enjoy due to AP.

My counselor has told me that it is best to actually complete your major prerequisite courses at Mt. Sac.

So if you follow my counselor’s advice, you SHOULD take the Econ courses again. But it’s your call.

I can see why it would be advisable to retake the Econ, although at this point I can really only take it if I have enough other credits to satisfy IGETC/Prerequisites in the one year I’m allotting myself.

One thing to remember is all of your pre-reqs HAVE to be done by Spring… you can’t take any in the fall. You really need to read over the assit.org agreement and the transfer student FAQ a few more times just to make sure you aren’t forgetting anything.

@nole - are you sure you cant take any in the fall???

i knwo pre-reqs gotta be done by SPRING, so wouldnt it make sense to take some in the previous fall or even winter?

sorry  I mean to say summer. He mentioned he might take a few in summer of '11 and UCB won’t allow that… everything must be done by spring.
