Muhlenberg Class of 2014

Is there pressure to be a part of Greek life?

studious- from what i heard on the tour, there isn’t much pressure. I think only around 15% of kids are a part of greek life

favorite thing about Muhlenberg: you really get the chance to form good relationships with the professors. And the variety of classes that fulfill requirements is great. (“Religions of Star Trek.” Need I say more?)

least favorite: it’s way too far from home. I’m 6 and a half hours away, so I can’t go home if I just want to escape campus for a weekend.

You’ll have an advising day in June to pick classes. They’ll send you stuff in the mail about it.

Overnight visitors just get registered with campus safety. You can stay two nights. There’s no huge complicated policy for that. :)

I know nothing about sports, except for Quidditch. I’m on the Quidditch team and it’s awesome .You should all join.

Greek Life… well, you’re a girl, so all your friends will rush sophomore year. It’s obnoxious. There’s no pressure to pledge but just know that if you don’t, your friends will ditch you for their new sisters at dinnertime.

Chellybelly, why is the advising day so early (if you know)?

thanks chelly! The kid i met actually told me that he is on the quidditch team and he also encouraged me to join; i’ll definitely check it out.

Not really sure about the date of advising. Maybe it has something to do with marketing- campus is really beautiful in May/June  Possibly also because that’s when freshmen pick classes, so that way the advisers have the entire summer to put together schedules? But I’m not really sure. Advising isn’t like orientation, though- there’s an orientation weekend for freshmen the weekend before classes start and everyone else arrives.

How is the food?
When I went on a tour, they weren’t finished with the dining hall…?

studious; when i went the food seemed great. The first time I went on the tour i also never saw the dining options. The second time I visited with my family we ate at the buffet. However, it was on parents weekend so I am not sure if this dining option is always an all-you-can-eat buffet. There were 3-4 dining options and the people i spoke to said they love the food.

To everyone going to Muhlenberg next year- what are your interests and what do you plan on doing next year. I guess i’ll start :)

I love playing and watching sports, hanging out with friends, watching TV, weightlifting, and just having fun… I am pretty easy-going and get along with everyone from the nerds to the jocks. I am also a very family-oriented person and will definitely miss my family next year. I am planning on studying psychology, and off the top of my head some ECs i would want to check out are joining the hillel, quidditch team, and soccer/basketball teams.

wow i feel like i am writing my interests for one of those dating sights towards the beginning.

My interests include: playing and watching sports, learning and speaking any and all languages, writing, talking on the phone ,walking outside with friends

Hmm… Right now I am planning to double major in Psych and Spanish.

Oh, and I want to play sports (intramural level)…I love all sports. (I love being outside, but not in the campy sort of way)

good stuff studious… sounds like we have some stuff in common; I’ll probably end up playing intramurals as well. Not sure how competitive it is, but it should be fun. Which languages do you speak?

:) . Yeah.
See, thing is, I love sports but I’m not sure I could get into club or varsity, but I do take sports very seriously. What teams do you like to watch?

Right now, I speak English and Spanish fluently. I would also like to learn French and a Middle Eastern language. What about you?

We do seem to have a lot of things in common. That’s awesome, though! I don’t know anyone else going to Muhlenberg next year, so it’s cool going in knowing that we have similar interests. what else do you like / what else …?

I am kind of in the same boat as you with the club/varsity. Although I played varsity soccer for 3 years, i was injured for part of each year and i am not sure how much the coach would like an injury prone player. In 6th grade, i played in 8th grade basketball leagues, but it got too competitive so i just stopped for good. However, I have somewhat regretted it and am contemplating training for next year… Do you know if there are club teams besides hockey, volleyball, rugby, and maybe a few others? On the website it says they only have a select few club teams. I like the San Diego Chargers (NFL), New Jersey Nets (NBA), and i am an avid USA soccer fan  I used to pitch, but baseball just bores the hell out of me. I’ve liked the bolts ever since i was a little kid because i loved their logo and jersey lol… can’t tell you how many times i’ve been called a front runner  Nets on the other hand are probably the worst team in history right now! How bout you?

That’s cool… i hope you can speak english fluently haha. My mom lived in france as a teenager so she speaks fluent french, but i only speak a little french and italian (school).

Hmmm i also like working with kids with special needs; I have worked with a boy with aspergers for the past 4-5 years, and now seeing him as a freshman in high school is pretty interesting as he seems to be getting along better than i originally anticipated. For the last 2 summers i volunteered at a summer program with children from the ages of 5-18 diagnosed with down syndrome and autism. I found it to be a really rewarding experience, and might want to pursue something like this down the road. My brother also has ADHD and severe motor skill problems, so i have been doing some work with him to try to strengthen his motor skills and social skills (at that age in 8th grade where he is starting to get into girls haha) I love staying in shape (lifting and sometimes swimming but i should probably start doing some more running and/or walking. My mom walks sometimes, so maybe i’ll do that and spend some more time with her before going away  My mom’s a chef, so i want to start learning to cook before i go away.

I actually know one other girl going to Muhlenberg next year and she’s really nice… Some of my friends also have relatives or friends at Muhlenberg, and from what they’ve said they all love it. I am going to stay up in about 2 weekends with a kid i met on my visit, so i should get more of a vibe of the school.

wow- long response lol

Grr…I keep accidentally deleting my whole response and starting over…this is the third time I’ve had to do that.
Anyway, teams I like: Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Mets, New York Knicks, US / Spain soccer.
I like football, hockey, and college basketball (more than NBA) the most.

I love watching soccer around the time of the World Cup, especially.
I’ve played soccer practically all my life and a little basketball, too. I enjoy bowling but just recreationally as I’m not great at it.

Mostly, I like walking outside in the cold because, especially as I have midterm exams coming up this week at school,it can be a great stress reliever for me.

I volunteered for a year in a rehab facility with anyone under the age of 18 with physical problems as a result of an event (not diseases they were born with, but things they have acquired). I’m thinking of being a psychologist…perhaps a adolescent substance abuse counselor (no, I am not and never was a substance abuser, but there are quite a few of them at my school, so I want to benefit people like that in generations to come).

The Chargers aren’t bad…I also love their jerseys and logo and used to kid around with people by telling them that was how I was going to choose a college (color and logo). I love their light blue jerseys most.

Yes, English I am fluent in :D, don’t worry. I am learning another language, and have been for several years as well (in addition to Spanish).

(sorry for a long response, as well).

Do you know what dorm building you want to stay in?

woah steelers and knicks!?!?!? NCAAB is awesome too- nothing beats cutting every class to sit in commons and watch march madness  USA Soccer > Spain- 3-2. just sayin

Yeah i know what you mean with the walking… I am not too stressed over mid terms because i am already into Muhlenberg, but i still would like to do well (80 or higher + each marking period) so i don’t have to take finals.

that’s cool and sounds like a good experience… Like you, i also try to stay away from drugs and alcohol. I’ve never done drugs, and very occasionally, i’ll have a few drinks, but i never go overboard and i don’t think it’s worth it.

haha yeah the powder blues are pretty sick. If only kaeding didn’t choke i would be wearing my LT jersey today (talk about a bad player) and be really pumped for the colts right now. Not the first time i’ve heard myself say this, but maybe next year.

I heard that wallz is the best freshman dorm as it has a thermostat and is just the nicest one to live in freshman year. I think that’s what it’s called, but i am not sure. How bout you?

Is it odd to be a Steelers and Knicks fan??

yeah…college basketball is amazing. which teams do you like most/ hate most?

I wanted the Chargers to beat the Jets so badly. Who do you want to win today’s games? I want the Saints over Vikings (I can’t stand Brett Farve) and I don’t really care who for the other game. I’m leaning toward the Colts, but, I heard if the Jets win, Rex Ryan will get an automatic berth to the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog eating contest on July 4, 2010. That’d be funny to watch. I like to watch those competitions, too (Go Joey chestnut!!) lol.

Yeah, US soccer is good. I like them a lot. But without them, I like Spain second most probably. Do you watch womens sports at all?

Yeah, I want to be in Wallz (it has air conditioning and its co-ed). I mean, I could live in Brown (the all girls one), but I don’t like being around just girls. I mean, I’m not a girly girl myself…I’m more of a tomboy I guess you could say.

nah just hate the steelers and knicks lol. In college, i like whoever is in my brackett, but last year i liked Maryland and Syracuse a little bit more because i was looking at them for college lol. College football and basketball was on my list if i were to go to a D1 school. I liked Missouri and Michigan State last year… Actually chose MSU to make the finals and lose to oklahoma, so that didn’t workout too well. Who do you like?

Like you, i can’t stand brett favre for the most part. However, the vikings were my SB pick from day 1 along with the ravens, so i gotta stick with them. I want the colts to beat the jets today because of my hatred towards the jets. I do give them a lot of credit for capitalizing on our mistakes and beating us last week. I got about 30 texts/calls from all of my friends who are jets fans letting me know that the jets won because it’s not as if i was watching the game anyway lol.

I do not watch professional women’s sports… The only girls sports i watch are the ones at my school, and i hope you don’t take this the wrong way but i just don’t find them to be nearly as fun. I went to a WNBA game when i was younger, and the people there took it so seriously; never knew people liked the WNBA so much. Do you follow any women’s sports?

Wallz is definitely my first choice as well… Do you know when we need to signup and do all of that stuff so we get it? I heard that mostly people who apply ED get wallz. I think it’s awesome that you like sports so much! Some of my girl friends like to play sports, but none really follow it that much.

Oh, and I like the Orlando Magic, too.

Hmm…I just love college basketball in general. I don’t really like UNC much (I think they’re really overrated this year). Kansas State is cool. I actually am trying to root against Kentucky…I’m not so fond of undefeated teams.

I just can’t stand how Farve will go back and forth on retirement every year it seems. I like Giants more than Jets. Hate the Patriots a lot!!!

I sometimes watch NCAA women bball but only if its live (tv its not as great) and soccer , beach volleyball(only in olympics) are good. its kinda sad considering im a girl, but I actually think that there are some games that are just meant to be men’s games. I like playing sports with guys and girls…kind of like in my gym class. I quit soccer because I was on an all girls travel team and the practices turned into gossip sessions 'cause it was all girls. I hate that…they’d all talk about school drama and I was eager to get out on the field and play. I don’t watch WNBA, no.

I thought I heard that we get dorm info in the mail, but I’m not sure when. I really want to be in wallz. that’d be awesome if we ended up both getting in there!

yeah…sometimes i find i can better connect with guys during the winter when the best sports are going on (hockey, football, bball) because girls dont know what the heck i’m talking about.
i hope that doesnt make me sound sexist towards girls…im not .

lol…i’m just a skeptic and like to say i dont fit into any one category for gender (gender roles, i believe are just from society and are forced on people) but more because i like to “be edgy” and not fit into the normalcy of society

I don’t mind kentucky… Callipari is a great coach and a good guy; actually met him once. I definitely agree with you about UNC though… no way they are even close to what they were last year.

There is no team (besides when the chargers have competition in their division) who i hate more than the pats. I do have a lot of respect for them though.

I completely see where you’re coming from with what you say about your girls soccer team. I think males are expected to perform at a much higher level than females, and that females usually don’t take it as seriously.

yeah i think there’s a good chance we can both get wallz; would be awesome.

again, i agree with you on the whole gender role thing. A lot of my friends are considered nerds, and a lot of my friends are considered jocks. I don’t conform to that whole “one social group” thing. I mean, it’s definitely there, but where I am from most people are friendly and accepting.

I don’t mind Kentucky, it’s more the fact that I dont want any one team to shine too much. I’m not sure that is. did you know Tyler Hansborough’s little brother is playing college ball this year? He’s at Notre Dame…averages around 9 points a game. Haven’t seen ND games much this season, but I think he works well with Harangody.

:) .

Yeah…I come from a really…diverse and accepting high school which pretty much throws all gender stereotypes out the door because everyone is so different there.

Hmm…sso what else…?

no i didn’t know that  i haven’t had too much time to follow NCAAB this year, but i will definitely start before the conference tourney’s. I watched every second of the Uconn/Syracuse 84 OT game and it was sick.

That’s pretty cool. My high school definitely has its share of *******s, but there aren’t too many. I wouldn’t say it’s too diverse, but it’s a nice place.

not sure what else lol
