Breaking news . . . from 1968.

The culture wars are so 1968. UCs are hurting because for many recent years the state has essentially been broke. Trying to hire one woman in one department in one school has no bearing on that whatsoever. But it does fit nicely with your worldview if you’re a right wing ideologue.

Enough already. Let’s move on.

Oh, Beliavsky just gets upset if there isn’t constant recognition and reiteration that: 1) Yes, Asians are the very smartest, 2) Whites are next, and 3) Blacks and Hispanics hold up the rear.

This is the Bowdoin thing all over again. People are mad because Berkeley doesn’t make its students take a 9th-grade American history class.

Actually, Berkeley does make its (non-international) students take a 9th grade American history course. A college course or standardized test score in the subject are accepted if one does not have a high school course.

Freedom under Clark Kerr!

I couldn’t get through the whole article, it covers a lot of ground. But I will say that the racial composition of CA residents and those going on to college at the UCs has changed so much over the years. I imagine that whatever diversity studies of UC students have been undertaken over the past few decades are probably already obsolete, so the emphasis on figuring out what it all means to everyone will probably continue.
