Hello. I have a question about fellowships. Is it possible to earn multiple fellowships simultaneously during your graduate career, or is there a restriction by the school (either a price cap or you can only accept one fellowship)?

Thanks.

Generally a school will give you a financial aid package. Assuming they fully fund the student (and not all do), they will set an amount the school is willing to fund, say tuition + $14,000 (by way of example). The school will first consider any outside fellowships or awards you have. They will supplement then with assistantships, uni fellowships, and scholarships. So if you’re coming in with outside fellowships, the program gives you less. As far as fellowships from the university itself, I’ve not heard of people getting more than one, as they use them to help as many students as they can.

This is a general rule, but you’d be best directing those questions to specific programs or looking at their department and financial aid sites for more specific answers.
