Multiple Ivy Leagues Decreases Chances?

I’ve heard a rumor that applying to multiple Ivy League schools will lower your chances of admissions at some of the institutions. Is there any truth to this?

No, that’s not a problem.

A thread earlier this year said the opposite. Both ideas are oversimplified. You can’t get in where you don’t apply. So if you like a college, apply to it. But any competitive college gets more applicants than it can offer admission, so you just might be denied by all competitive colleges. (The way to deal with that issue is to apply to a sure-bet “safety” college that you like and can afford.) Colleges know everyone is applying to more than one college these days, so they are not offended, and don’t care, that you apply to other colleges.

Does that help?

Yeah, it does to an extent. I’ve got the safety school covered already, though its great advice for anybody who might find this thread in a search. Thanks a lot for the reply.

To elaborate, though, the rumor has more to deal with the schools allegedly comparing their lists of admitted students in order to decrease the percentage of those admitted but not later enrolled. Do you think this is a possibility?

I think it would be extremely unethical if colleges actually shared acceptance lists with each other. Ultimately, it should be up to the students, not the colleges, to decide where they matriculate.

^ They dont share lists for general admissions, but only share lists for ED to make sure that someone hasnt applied ED To 2 schools.

That rumor is fantastical and I stated so in this thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/434324-ivy-league-conspiracy.html

1) the top tier Ivies don’t give a darn about yield= prestige. They want to know yield so they can correctly guess how many matriculants to actual available slots: ACCURACY of yield prediction is more important that the yield itself.
2) the work it would actually TAKE to collude in this (illegal and unethical) venture would be to what benefit? the rumor assumes that the Ivies are active “rankings” whores. While no institution is immune from the pernicious “rankings”, this scenario would be plain STUPID. The eight Ivies already own slots in the top twenty. Even if this conspiracy took place, what would the top schools gain? HYPD would be helping the yields of BCPC? And this whole thing assumes that a student that would otherwise be accepted at 4 schools, instead gets rejected by 3 of them to only get accepted at the lone school. Yeah, right.

Ivies already got slapped in the face by the Dept of Justice for trying to collude with fin aid offers…they’re not going to want to try again

not at all. apply to all if u want, but if you do, you obviously havent researched enough about the colleges

lol i applied to all the ivies except dmouth, i think i’ll be fine

Well, I took it as less of a matter of prestige and more of an issue about offering admission to the students most likely to enroll, but the evidence presented is certainly compelling enough to dispel the rumor (to me, at least).

And as for myself, I’m applying to a few Ivy League schools, but certainly not all of them. The few that I am applying to all appeal to me much more for the academics and environment / resources provided than the classification associated with them.
