I’m an incoming freshman for stony, and I just wanted to ask if I could take MUS 182 or MUS 382, both of which are vocal classes. I’m just asking because a friend of mine went through orientation, and registration of classes, etc., and he said both of these classes weren’t available for registration or something? I plan on majoring in science, but I may want to minor in music/singing.

You’d want to contact the department to get into those classes, because they require a simple audition. You can contact Perry Goldstein, the undergrad music director, via e-mail at perry.goldstein@stonybrook.edu; he’ll get you in touch with the right people.

Anyone can take music performance classes, regardless of your major; but there is an audition. They really just want to make sure you have some basic competency before taking you on as a student… you’re not auditioning for the Met, so just go in there and show them you can sing. Contact Perry; he’s great.
