If this is my first time in any structured music class, will I be able to handle it. I know how to read music somewhat, but not sightread or anything like that. I’ve been playing guitar for several years, but haven’t been reading sheet music.

Do I need to know anything I won’t know from a summer of brushing up on the very, very basics?

d4r7h3v1l, I’m in the exact same position as you… I play guitar but can’t sightread, but I feel like I know music theory pretty well and am planning on taking 55B in the Spring.

I’m taking some piano lessons this summer so I can at least partially learn to sight read when I arrive at Duke. Also, I bought The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Music Theory, and that is very informative.

These are just some ideas, but that’s what I’m doing to prepare…

I decided that that’s pretty much what I’m doing too. My parents bought me a music theory book for Hanukkah, so I’ll finally read it and try some piano. I’m already enrolled in 55B.
