For instrumental musicians -
Is Georgetown big on music programs?
I’ve looked up student organizations and it had a pep band and a wind ensemble, but no orchestra.
(I’m a wind player, but I prefer playing in a full orchestra.)
Is there really no orchestra at Georgetown?
I find that hard to believe because there must be some string players.
Overall, what opportunities are available for musicians?

I’ve heard that georgetown is seriously lacking in the music

Founded in 1980, the Georgetown University Orchestra is a large ensemble devoted to the study and performance of orchestral music, including repertoire composed for full orchestra and chamber orchestra. Literature is selected from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods. Orchestra membership is open to all instrumentalists and requires an audition.

We do have an orchestra. I have heard from those who have been in it that its not a particularly rigorous program. Unless you are hoping to be a world class flutist, I think what you get out of orchestra is a function of how much you put in.

I hope though that you aren’t choosing schools based solely on an extracurricular. We have tons of other activities. Volunteering is big at Georgetown. I have a friend who heads GU Melody–a program that teaches youth music at local YMCAs. Georgetown is also home of GUGS–the grilling society. We have some highly active political groups. If all else fails, there is always something to do in the city. The Kennedy Center has free performances every day.
