Our daughter is interested in applying to a Music Business major, which is a completely new area for our family. Our son is currently studying Aviation, so this is a very different path. We’d truly appreciate any advice, guidance, or recommendations—especially from college counselors or anyone familiar with this field.
Excellent program at NYU. We know a few kids in there and it’s fantastic.
There are programs. It depends
- budget, where you want to be, stats. Anything from a Middle Tennessee to Syracuse to Belmont (religious) to Drexel.
Some might do a minor with a business major so you have more flexibility should it not work out as it’d be a tough career.
You might do a match me.
But tough to get into and pricey without aid, so agree a “match me” type post with stats, budget etc would be useful to give ideas (even if stats are good that’s still reachy so targets would be good to know for OP).
I’m still in high school so take this with a grain of salt, though I still think some of this is important info
Funny I’m seeing this post, I was planning to go into aviation—flight dispatching specifically—but I decided music business might be a better choice for me.
I personally applied to Belmont (it was a match because I’m a christian, love country music, and have stats way above the school’s average LOL and they give out a lot in merit scholarships!) but others here have listed good schools. An important part of my reasoning for Belmont was it’s the only music business degree that’s an actual business degree. What I mean by that is the diploma literally says “business administration”, but the major has a music industry focus. Meaning if that doesn’t work out then I’d still have some career flexibility.
Also, it’s very important to go somewhere where the industry is. For the most part, that’s New York, Nashville, and LA. The degree itself really means nothing in the business, it’s the networking done in those locations. It’s very hard to get a job without connections.
There was a school closer to me (JMU) with a music industry minor that people suggested I do, but that’d be near useless in the mountains of Virginia.
If Belmont or NYU are too pricy, I’ve heard good things about Middle Tennessee. It is more of a commuter campus and I heard it can be boring, but in the career prospects area it’s great.
