I’m a guitar player currently studying jazz and classical privately looking to study jazz in college (although I could also do classical)

The problem is, my parents are worried about me not getting decent pay after college and want me to have a backup plan. Apart from playing guitar I love working on amps, pedals, and instruments, so I was wondering if there are any colleges that I could study in (minor?) and learn the skills of either a luthier or something in electronics (more geared toward audio) while still studying to pursue my goal of becoming a session/touring musician.

I don’t think there’s a US four year college with a luthier major/minor. I could well be wrong. I want to say Oberlin, but I may be remembering a summer workshop or summer study program. You might want to check the North Bennet Street School.

University of Miami offers a B.S. in Music Engineering Technology which is a double major of general music technology and electrical engineering.

I am not familiar with any luthier major/minor at Oberlin. They may have some sort of program going with Steinway as a site where piano technicians are trained, but I do not recall anything having to do with guitars and such.

Berklee has at least one class devoted to instrument repair, and I seem to remember a luthier’s shop right around the corner from the main entrance, possibly associated with the school.

If you have the grades, you may also want to take a look at what Stanford has to offer.
