<p>I’ll keep this short. I’m a very serious musician, and I plan to major in an engineering field, particularly ECE. Even though I will be majoring in engineering, I plan to have high activity in music, and I would like to find a school that has great programs in both areas. What are some colleges you would recommend?</p>
<p>I will assume your primary criteria will be based on the engineering program and there are others far more qualified to point you in that direction. </p>
<p>“Serious musician” and “high activity in music” are nebulous terms and can mean different things to different people. If you are speaking from a perspective of conservatory level experiences and ability then you may well be disappointed in many programs that may offer a participatory experience for non majors. It may also be instrument and discipline contingent. The options are institution specific and will include a broad spectrum from audition based tiered performance organizations to combined faculty/student/community ensembles. Applied faculty and instruction may be accessible, off-limits, or out of pocket. The detail is typically found buried within the school’s undergrad handbook (or music department supplement) rather than the overview provided within the prospective student webpages. </p>
<p>You question may well result in a plethora of options, and will include institutions that have attached/affiliated conservatory level programs. Please realize that the suggestions may be offered with little or no knowledge of what a serious musician seeking high activity may need or desire. As you begin to assemble your options, I would suggest you speak and correspond directly with both the music department administration, as well as current music peers in the programs as non-majors.</p>
