<p>I am a prospective music education major currently debating between Trinity University and SMU for music education (i’m thinking about specializing in elementary or middle school). Trinity has a lot of opportunities for education (the students there begin student teaching as early as their freshman or sophomore year and can take five years to get a bachelor’s and master’s degree), but their music department is much more relaxed than SMU’s (there is only one band and one orchestra). SMU has a prestigious and very competitive music department and i hear that if i attend SMU, I will grow a lot as a musician. Their education department is larger than Trinity’s, so there aren’t as many teaching opportunities for each individual (or so i’ve heard; correct me if im wrong).
Will preparation in teaching or in music benefit me more as a music teacher?</p>
