music/instrument course at U of M

Someone once told me that there was a course at U of M where you get together with people in your class and play music, like a band, with keyboards, guitars, drums, etc. Does anyone know if it really exists and what it is called?

There are any number of music courses at UMich because it’s home to a top national school of music.

Conservatory notwithstanding, LSA also has a pretty wide range of music offerings, some of them through the RC (residential college).

There are also a blue zillion ensemble classes, ranging from a wind ensemble, symphony, jazz improv to digital music ensemble over at the school of music. Some of those are pretty contemporary/experimental…others decidedly western/classical in nature. There are classes on recording (often restricted to the music engineering students in the PAT program) where you would often also find a contemporary band ensemble.

Music majors have first dibs on most of the studio-style classes, but sometimes you can access them. What is your musical background and what are you looking for in terms of your musical experience? There’s a good chance that whatever it is, you’ll find it at UMich ;)
