Music Major programs

Okay, I am a rising Junior and it just dawned on me that I want to always study music (I play the Bassoon). I want to take my music career to a post-secondary level, but I also want to have a backup career (Music kind of being a hobby, but still a profession). My plan, right now, will be to go on a pre-med track (not a concentration), Major in Music, but also major/concentrate in another area (preferably a foreign language). I was wondering what is the reputation of the columbia music program. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!!

your course of study will be pretty intense if you plan to double major in non-science and do pre-med too, at CU with the Core it will be of course tough, but just about anywhere you will find yourself pressed to do that. so temper your ambition, but who knows, you might be one of those freaks who can do it without breaking a sweat.

my friend was a music major at cu and gave me some insights into the department. for grad school it is apparently a real big place for theory and composition. he said for ugrad the dep’t doesn’t have ton of majors, but most students are pretty brilliant. btw - if you like/love vampire weekend, like me, a few of those folks were music majors at CU.

as far as reputation, i would say it is recognized and respected. you are hardpressed to find a department at CU that is ‘bad.’ some are amazing, but the majority are good and def better than average across the board. in the end though the ugrad school gives you currency and respect regardless of the chosen major. so a school at columbia’s level will give you a lot so no need to punish yourself with trying to do too much.
