Musical Theater at UC schools?

Hi all,

My daughter is applying for a physics major and and musical theater BA or musical theater minor, (not BFA programs since it will be too hard to do that and physics. (she is a junior - I know the application deadline passed for seniors)

Does anyone have firsthand experience or even just insights and knowledge about musical theater at the various UCs.

It appears that for many of the programs, you wait until after admission to audition or request to be in the musical theater program. Also, it doesn’t seem possible to request to join a UC school as a double major - i.e. you have to state your rank preference for majors. To access the place on the application to upload additional materials required for, e.g. UCLA, you have to mark theater as first choice major. However, physics is her primary focus and her actual ā€œfirst choiceā€.

Also, does anyone have any info at all about musical theater at UC Santa Barbara?
I can find almost nothing at all to suggest they have any musicals on campus, UC-run, student-run, or otherwise.

I have spent time on all the various UC theater program website pages, but it is still hard to tell what’s up. Any help is much appreciated.

UC San Diego is highly ranked.

I have heard from friends with theater kids, that UC Irvine is a top UC pick for theater -several we know were accepted at both UCI and UCLA and chose UCI, but I do not know if that includes musical theater.

I have also heard good things about UCSC’s theater (and music) program.

I don’t believe any UC gives you the option of picking a ā€˜double’ major.

In light of this, so much will depend on her stats, which you don’t mention. Will it be easier for her to get into, say, UCLA as a MT major or a physics major? If she applies MT will it be easy enough for her to study physics at UCLA? Does she see herself looking at a career in both or either? A lot to consider.

Hopefully others have additional input.

I was a guest artist at UCSB a couple of years ago working on a theatre department production and had a wonderful time. The students and faculty are lovely and I would recommend this program to students interested in studying theatre at a UC. I’ve kept up with the department and it doesn’t appear that musical theatre is ever a part of their department productions, however. I do believe they have an on-campus musical theatre club that mostly produces smaller-scale shows (revues, cabarets).

The only thing I know about the UC’s is that UCLA has a BA in MT and UCI has a BFA in MT. I’m not sure if any of the UC’s offer a minor in MT.
