Musical Theater Awards

My S is a junior in hs and has done a lot of musical theater (17 shows so far, plus plays and tech for several additional shows). He is not planning to pursue it as a major in college, but wants to continue singing in college and hopefully do community theater as an adult. He has been nominated for a regional award in the musical theater category (he had nominations from both a high school teacher and a community theater director).

He has a friend who is a silver winner for the YoungArts award in a different category (friend is a senior) and I looked at those awards and saw there is a musical theater category.

Question: if he does not plan to major in musical theater, is it worthwhile to apply for a YoungArts award?

Besides YoungArts, what are other competitions/awards that he could apply for? He may be applying to some reach schools that meet full need (due to our low EFC) and we’re hoping having some awards on his resume might help. Since he’s done so much musical theater that seems like a good category for him. He does have some other awards on his resume (district choir, music competitions, forensics awards, and tennis).

I think it is definitely worth it for your son to enter NFAA YoungArts even though he doesn’t plan to major in MT. He is applying to very selective colleges and such colleges do care about the depth of his involvement in extracurricular endeavors and his achievements in those areas. It sounds like your son has dedicated activities in MT as well as achievements to date. He doesn’t need NFAA, but he can’t lose by entering and surely a national award is significant on an application/resume.

Aside from the resume benefits of applying to NFAA YoungArts, D received a very nice cash award for being a Level I winner this year, not to mention an all-expense-paid fun week of Master Classes and performances in Miami. The cash award isn’t given as a scholarship (D got a check), so it can be used for whatever, regardless of future schooling plans.
