Musical Theater College Admission 2025

My daughter scheduled her on campus audition on Nov. 15, so fortunately all dates were available at that time.
Hopefully everyone is able to get a date that works for them!:crossed_fingers:

Yeah I just realized that T-T. It kind of sucks because I really wanted to perform in person but ehhh I got to keep costs in mind lol.

Ok I have a question. I’m booking my auditions and have realized that I’m going to need to do them mostly online for financial reasons. I went to book for Point Park and it seems like there is only one slot for online auditions T-T and it’s taken. So what do I do rn? I can’t fly out to LA in this economy T-T.

I can’t guarantee but in most case for virtual auditions, there will be people who will be cancelling their slots. so, i think you should contact the admissions team of point park ( in this case) to be added in the wait list for the virtual audition. Also, when emailing them, asking how likely you can be unlisted from the wait list may be helpful too! I know thereā€˜s lots of difficulties traveling around but i wish you best of luck and remember that this thread is for helping each other in this processā˜ŗļø

I have a question to anyone who already auditioned for any school this November. Can somebody kindly provide us details how the singing/monologue audition was? Most schools personal audition slots are about 7~15 minutes but how did it go? Did you sing the whole verse ( like the whole 32 bars or 60 sec) or did they cut you before finishing it. How much time did you spend for each song and monologue? Did you do your additional song? Did they ask you questions besides the audition materials? I know this will depend on each school but it would be helpful if I could know how some school works like.

My daughter had an audition in mid December. She prepared two songs, 32 bars/1 min each, and one monologue. She was asked to sing through both songs, and perform her full monologue. No interview type questions were asked, but she did have some friendly ā€œbanterā€ with the director facilitating auditions. You are right in thinking each school will run things a little differently. My best advice would be to prepare what each school is asking for, but be ready to do a little more, or less, depending on what the individual situation calls for. Best of luck and remember, you deserve to be there so just have fun!

Hello! So in my experience the schools rarely spent more than 10 minutes except ball state who really spent a lot of time work shopping and interviewing which was really nice! I was able to sing both of my 32 bar cuts without being cut off. My songs were both a minute and 10 seconds each and my monologue was a minute. I’d say if youre pieces are very musical theater-y you should ALWAYS have a pop rock song. Actually you need to have a pop rock song because they will probably ask to hear it. For me personally both of my songs were Musical Theatre but one of them had an R&B/soul flare so I never had to sing the pop rock cut. Yes they will ask questions if interested! Here’s a few I heard. Why do you want to go to (insert school name)? What do you want out of us here at (insert school name)? I see you were (role in show on your resume) can you tell us about that experience? What do you hope to do after receiving your BFA? If you are prepared to answer these, you will have no problem with the interview portion!!! Additionally they may ask you to ask your own questions. This is your time to make deep conversation and connection with the school so ask them anything to make sure that this is the right school for you!!!
PS if the school asked you to prepare a classical monologue, they may hear your contemporary and decide that they don’t need to see it. This happened with a few of the schools. ( don’t read too far into it though!)

My daughter has had a few auditions/callbacks. The song and monologue requirements vary and she’s also had them ask to look at her binder and then choose a song from there. She’s had them give her redirection. They’ve asked her questions about what she’s looking for in a program, something she recommends, and her other interests/hobbies. Emerson was by far the school that took the most time with her - 10 minute song audition, 10 minute monologue audition, and a dance call.
Hope this helps!

They love to hear a familiar jam but it wouldn’t hurt to have one or two other options That are a little less ā€œfamousā€ as others may pick the same material and so that way, you can say hey I have these options and the auditor can pick their favorite!!! I know learning two whole songs right before auditions may not be feasible so don’t stress out too much about it!

How many Michigan invites for audition typically? Anyone knows? I am afraid it is still a small percentage that actually get admission into Musical Theater BFA?

Yes, it’s a very small percentage who get accepted to UMich, regardless of talent. It’s a lottery school.

Oh absolutely a tiny percentage. Hundreds are called back for a total of 24 spots at Michigan MT.

I think they admit about 55-60 students to yield a class of 22-24.
The odds of getting accepted are very low!

If they audition 600 and admit 60 to yield 24, that is 10%, not too bad!

Yes, 90% of those who audition will not receive an offer. For this reason, it’s important not to have a dream school, but rather a number of schools which seem like they might be a good fit. And I say this as a parent of an international student who is not applying to any ā€œsafetyā€ schools because it doesn’t make sense for her situation.
