Hello everyone. This is an MT applicant myself right now, getting ready for a very few busy months of auditioning Today I’m asking a question about resumes for auditions. Currently, I’m revising mine to fit on 8 x 10 paper to match with headshots for my auditions. Most kids seem to have a training section on their resume. Is this training section referring to private studio training only? If so, does it make my resume look weak if I only have one thing under the training section? (I’d probably not have a training section if that would make me look weak) This could also be a dumb question because, at the end of the day, a resume isn’t going to make or break my auditions. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!!!
Training sections on MT resumes at the high school level generally list the amount of years of private or group voice lessons and dance lessons (as well as dance styles), as well as acting training (if applicable). I remember when I was in high school, I definitely counted my grade 10, 11, and 12 vocal music class as voice training! If you have something equivalent at your school, or you’ve taken arts classes at your high school, feel free to include that and the name of your teacher. Don’t worry about your resume appearing ‘weak’ - you’re a high school senior and you’re right where you need to be! Schools are investing in potential, not product.
It might be helpful to think of your resume as a way for the panel to start a conversation with you - they might ask you about a role you’ve played, or a special skill, or what you learned in X class. But you don’t need to prove yourself using your resume, not at your stage in your career. When you’re a professional, the names and credits on your resume will become more important (because someone behind the table might call someone whose name is on my resume and say ‘hey, I heard you’ve worked with CanadianMTgirl, what’s she like? should I hire her?’), but at this stage in the game, your resume just serves to contextualize to the panel where you’re coming from.
Break a leg in your auditions!
