Musical Theatre Safety/Fit Schools?

I live in Texas, and my top school choices are in state because that’s what’s most affordable, but obviously schools like Texas State and UT accept very few students and are reach schools. Are there any schools in Texas or even outside of Texas that would be considered fit schools or safety schools and not reaches? My preference is a BFA in Musical Theatre or any program with a musical theatre concentration. (If you don’t know, reach schools are very selective schools, basically “dream schools.” Fits are ones that I would have a pretty good chance of getting into, safeties are non-audition.)

I do not know anything about these programs but others you might check out in Texas are:
Sam Houston State
Abilene Christian
West Texas
Texas Christian
Also, not sure where in Texas you are, but if its somewhat close you might look into University of Central Oklahoma. I do not know how competitive admissions to its MT program are.
Or, in the other direction, University of Utah where you can get in state tuition after the first year. It is competitive for admission.

There are 5 major regional auditions in Texas where you can audition for 30-40 (or more) schools in a large room + callbacks format:

North Texas Drama Auditions

Greater Houston Area Auditions

Greater San Antonio Auditions

Texas Thespians Conference (in Dallas this year)

Texas Educational Theatre Association

Colleges from all over the USA attend, not just Texas schools. Most attending colleges set up tables at these events and you can talk directly to Theatre Department faculty, including many department heads. Many schools will still require you to come for an on-campus audition or an audition at Unifieds, but by receiving a callback you know that they are interested in you (and you get the opportunity to chat with them on an individual basis).

Affordable (in state tuition)

Sam Houston (BFA MT) - competitive for admission

UT Arlington (BFA MT) - not sure about how competitive it is for admission.

UTEP (BFA MT) - non-audition for entry, audition for scholarships.

West Texas A&M (BA MT) - not sure about how competitive it is for admission.

Some of the other affordable theatre programs that do not have an MT program are Texas Tech, University of Houston and Stephen F. Austin.

Expensive to Very Expensive (2-4X in-state tuition)

TCU (BFA MT) - competitive to very competitive for admission.

SMU (new MT minor) - competitive to very competitive for admission (you have to enter through the BFA Acting, Dance, or BM Voice programs) and then audition for MT.

Abilene Christian - conservative school, not sure about how competitive it is for admission.

Hardin-Simmons (BFA MT) - conservative school, not sure about how competitive it is for admission.

St. Edwards (MT minor) - non-audition for entry, audition for scholarships.

Some of the other expensive theatre programs that do not have an MT program are Baylor and Southwestern.

If you have very good grades and test scores you may qualify for merit aid at the private schools that can reduce tuition significantly, but they may still be more expensive than the public schools. Talent awards are also available that could possibly make a private affordable.

University of Alabama (Theatre BA w/MT concentration) and University of Arizona (BFA MT) have very good merit opportunities, perhaps OOS/reciprocity also.

I loved plymouth state in nh…it’s an audition program so not necessarily a safety, but a great program reasonably priced.

University of Oklahoma offers out-of-state incentives for academically qualified applicants as well as terrific merit aid. It is an audition program however.

Can someone help with safety school ideas for BFA MT located anywhere in US, med - lg city preferred. Don’t care too much about cost. Grades are OK.

Check out University of Rhode Island. BFA Acting major with a minor in Vocal Performance. It is a non-audition program. This was one of my son’s safeties. They also offered a fairly decent scholarship for an out of state student.

U of Mississippi - easy academic admittance. You start training right away, but audition after 1st year for the BFA MT. Not a city, but beautiful college campus and town. Safety, not cheap, in a big city = Columbia College of Chicago.
