I am a transfer student looking to transfer from X University with studies in Communications, to Univ. of Maryland, most likely in musical theatre, theatre, or vocal performance. I would probably keep up my communications or have another field of study along side my arts degree.

That being said, I’m hoping to study classically in voice with a bit of MT on the side.

Does Univ. of Maryland have a good music/ theatre program for people with my goals?

Thanks.

I am a piano performance major at UMd, so I can try to answer your question with my knowledge of the school of music. I may not be much help for theater, though.

First, it’s difficult to tell from the way you phrase your question, but do you have any prior experience with voice/theater? All of our programs require an admission audition. It is not possible for a beginner to take lessons with a studio teacher.
If you have taken lessons before and think you can do well in an audition, you may want to take a look around the website:
[Voice/Opera Division - University of Maryland School of Music](http://music.umd.edu/divisions/voice_opera/)
As a transfer student, you’d probably be looking at a Bachelor of Arts or a minor, so that you can still graduate in a reasonable amount of time.

For theater, I don’t know anything about the program but here is their website:
[BA Theatre | University of MD School of Theatre Dance and Performance Studies](http://tdps.umd.edu/node/254)

One thing that I’d like to caution you about is that for any of these programs, you cannot just take classes. You must be pursuing a degree or minor program. So, a combination of communications, vocal performance, AND theater may be difficult to complete. But, if you’re determined… anything is possible!

Hope this was helpful, and good luck! :)
