Hey, i am a junior who is taking the sats in may. I got a part in our spring musical, The Sound of Music, as a Nazi Party member (minor part). It takes up about 2 hours every day. Do you guys think this time would be better spent studying for the SAT’s? What will have a greater impact on my life and college admissions? Will they see this as an impressive EC or not? Could I do both effectively? I won’t have TOO much time to study during the summer.

Guys, im at a crossroads in my life and must choose where to commit. How do I tell the director that I wanna drop out after he already assigned the parts?
Thanks guys.

You don’t need to study 2 hours every day for months for the SAT to do well on it. If you’re worried, just start studying now and take a ton of practice tests. In my opinion, practice is more important than anything else when it comes to doing well on the SATs. After awhile, you sort of just get used to the types of questions they ask and become familiar with the way you’re tested. This familiarity is probably more helpful than memorizing all vocab words that might show up on the test.

but i didnt do so hot on my psats. Is it possible to raise my score to 2200+ without constant practice and studying? Lemme hear some success stories.

if you don’t have enough time to sit down and study, use vocab flashcards in the car or whenever you have a few minutes to spare. i used to study them with friends for 10 or 15 minutes during our lunch period for the few weeks leading up to the sats. and a few hours a day isn’t really necessary; set aside half and hour or so everyday and alternate between math/cr/writing each day and I think that should be enough review, considering you have until may.

I understand your predicament, but you’re going to go crazy if you study for the SAT two hours a day. Have some fun.

I’ve never acted in my high school’s theatre department, but I get the impression that for the minor roles, a lot of the rehearsal time is just spent sitting in the audience while the leads actually rehearse. I don’t know what your situation is, but maybe you could do the flashcard thing during rehearsal.

Do the musical! I’d go psycho if I had to study for the SAT for hours when I knew I could be doing something fun instead. The musical will also force you to manage your time really well, so you might end up studying for the SAT more effectively than if you didn’t do the musical at all.

Then again, I’m a little biased since I am a theatre kid.

Again, I am biased because I am a theatre kid.

BUT!
Do the musical. You will meet so many people and make so many memories to look back on later in life. Yes, the SAT is important, but studying 2 hrs a day isn’t going to help, and in the long run, say 20 yrs from now, you will regret those lost memories. Something my director tells all her students/cast members: Memories are the only thing you have when you get older.
Go out there and make them.

Since your part is so small, you won’t be need the entire 2 hours. So when you’re not on stage, study! If it’s too noisy where you are and you are one of those who needs complete silence, ask your director if you can leave after you’re and come back and hang out in the library.

I was part of the backstage crew (tech, layout, evrything) and I had to go to every single one of their practices.
It took up to 20 hrs a week, including weekends, and sometimes, we had to be excused from class to attend practices.
I had no problems studying the SATs at the same time… I just studied 1-2 hrs per night on weekdays and a bit more in the weekends.
