Hi! Sorry, I don’t mean to impose, but I figured this would be the best place to post. My parents and I are heading to Atlanta this weekend to see some colleges, and I just wanted to know what you all considered the absolute must-sees in Atlanta? We like everything - especially food! and museums, parks, etc, etc. Both common tourist hot-spots and “locals only” hole-in-the-walls are welcome! (Just have to stay on a limited budget and time-frame)

and the Beltline …truly wonderful walking/biking area…similar to the High Line in NYC > go to facebook (dot) com and then /AtlantaBeltline …it was designed by a Georgia Tech student as his graduate thesis and it has become a hit beyond anyone’s dreams.
And i hope you can visit GA Tech’s campus…my D and I were really impressed.

I found sitting in the original Ebeneezer Baptist church and hearing recordings of Martin Luther King surprisingly moving. The whole MLK site is definitely worth the visit.

Don’t forget to get some Krispy Kreme donuts fresh off the conveyor belts!

World of Coca-Cola is fun. We liked the Georgia Aquarium, but not as much as the ones in Tampa and Chattanooga. We used to go to the Fernbank Museum of Natural History & Fernbank Science Center on nearly every visit, but haven’t been for a while. The High Museum of Art is my second favorite art museum (the first is a small museum in my home town for sentimental reasons.) Both Chowhound and Zagat can provide good restaurant ideas. You’re sure to have a great weekend.

I loved GA Tech and Emory so much when I visited, and I really hope that I can attend college in ATL. For good Mexican, The Boneyard Cantina is amazing (but in a weird location). The High Museum usually has a cool rotating exhibit, but I would check their website to be sure. Have fun!!

My favorite places to visit in Atlanta are: Atlanta Botanic Gardens, the aquarium, the Swan House, the High Museum, and the MLK memorial. Favorite places to eat are Farm Burger, Desta Ethiopian, Willy’s Mexicana Grill, Figo, and the Flying Biscuit. All of these are casual and inexpensive.

If you give us an idea of your plans/ where you are staying there are several Atlanta regular posters that can offer suggestions for restaurants close to where your hotel is.

Wow, those are some great suggestions. Honestly, we don’t know where we’re staying yet - we’re pretty flexible in that sense, and I get the feeling we’ll be deciding that first night! We passed through Atlanta a couple years ago, but didn’t have much time to do anything, so I’m making a point of planning now. We’ll be visiting Emory and Agnes Scott, though that won’t take up a big chunk of the trip. We’ll likely stay downtown for the most part, except that I’m insisting we go the Buford Highway Farmers Market (saw it on tv, looks to die for!). :)

Buford Highway farmers market is ok. Watching them cut the fish is fun. However I like the Dekalb farmers market. And how much do you need to buy?

We don’t really “need” to buy anything, but they seem to have a good supply of ethnic foods that we’re just unable to get anywhere near where I live - and that’s a pretty big deal for my parents who only came to this country twenty years ago! However, Dekalb seems to offer about the same, from what I gleaned from their website, and is much closer to everything else
