My 10 year old son just got a jury summons

Good old Essex County screw-ups. Meanwhile, I am a middle-aged woman who votes in every election, even the minor ones, pays oodles of taxes, and keeps all licenses current, yet I haven’t received a summons in about 15 years.

Something tells me this won’t be easy to fix…

Hmm.

I’m 17 and was asked to join the AARP because I’m “fully eligible.”

This sounds like a much bigger screw up. He registered to vote?

Go to the newpaper. They will have some fun with it.Maybe your son could show up with a news crew, do a report on it.

I like that. I wonder how they got his name, anyway.

For the sheer joy of seeing the court officer’s very red face, I would take him that day.

I have no idea. I’m actually not sure how the jury pool is created, but I thought voter registration & drivers license were the main source of names. We have a very unusual & very ethnic surname, so I’d be shocked if there was another Little StickerShock in our county.

JB: I got the AARP membership invitation as a teen, too. They’ll do anything to bump up their numbers.

Hmmm…wonder if being the youngest juror in the history of NJ could be a college hook?

I love the idea of showing up with a TeeVee news crew in tow.

By the way, “Shock” isn’t all that unusual as a surname, although I believe “Schock” is slightly more usual.

Rofl college hook. DO IT.

Um, be careful bringing him down there, SS. In Essex County, they just might seat him on a panel…

I don’t know about bringing him to the court. All that time spent could cut into his SAT prep classes. He is ten, afterall. Time to get cracking.

SS, does your son have income (such as from a trust or UGMA account) that requires him to file a tax return?

http://www.judiciary.state.nj.us/essex/jury/faq_jury.htm#two

I am assuming he doesn’t drive or vote… but maybe you’ve got some savings bonds in his name and have been electing to file annual tax returns reporting accrued interest along the way?

I also agree with the others: just show up and see what happens. ;)

Mystery solved: Tax return.

Calmom, do you hire yourself out for financial planning? I’m always learning from your posts & you seem to have this info at your fingertips.
