My application essay

I’m applying to Tisch, but I also want to dual major at CAS. My interests are equally divided between filmmaking and philosophy.

I wrote my essay with this in mind, explaining how I view filmmaking and philosophy as interconnected endeavors. But my concern is that, since I have to apply to just Tisch, the adcoms will take this as reflecting indecisiveness.

I contacted a Tisch guidance councilor, and she said, “You can definitely talk about both interests in your application. This will not have an adverse effect on how your application is viewed.”

But I’m still a little nervous.

The essay structure will link a childhood experience to the value of knowledge. This will progress into my discovery of philosophy in college. Next, I link philosophy with film and discuss how the latter interest began to take hold. Finally, I mention how NYU is a rare school where I can pursue both fields to full potential, and discuss philosophy and filmmaking faculty at NYU and why I want to study under them.

What do you guys think?

sounds great! Tisch is not looking just for craftsmen, but for artists who can think, envision and create. Go for it! It doesn’t sound indecisive to me at all, but thoughtful!

also, these schools are looking to find out who YOU are. There are no right or wrong answers in how the essays are approached.
