My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding

I’m fascinated by this show. I have no personal experience only the vague memory as a child of hearing that gypsies would steal the laundry off your line.
Married at 16? A life of minimal schooling and housework? Strong religious beliefs? Not much different than the Duggars I suppose!
The scene of the community being torn down was sad. What is the basis of this prejudice? How much do those dresses cost? How do they earn money?
The last show I saw was asking for American gypsies for a new show.
Anyone else watch?

I saw the first episode only. I hope to keep up with it. Was interested to see that we’ll not only learn about traditional gypsies, but also the Irish travellers, which I’ve never heard of. Thanks for starting a thread on the show. It will be interesting to learn about these different cultures.

Thanks for starting the thread. I found the show fascinating as well. I’ve been to the UK a few times and had encountered some gypsies. I was aware they had their own customs but it’s still pretty foreign to me.

Celibacy before marriage and the provocative dress of the girls was an interesting combination. I believe they have strict purity laws, which may have something to do with not having a bathroom inside the trailer?

In the Holocaust, in addition to the Jews, gypsies, the disabled, and homosexuals were among the groups also targeted for extermination.

I just can’t wrap my mind around the culture…the girls show all the goods, but the guys can’t touch any of the goods. A girl can’t go on a date and can’t kiss a boy, but she can out in public dressed like a stripper.
