My cat uses finger bowls...what odd thing does your pet do?

It’s time for another Cat Thread…and Dog Thread or whatever you have! :)

As some may remember last year my dearly loved Mittens died, and I then got 2 new kittens from the rescue shelter.

Because one of the kittens was chosen because he looks EXACTLY like my old Mittens, I named him Mittens as well (I know, that sounds weird to many…I get that. LOL).

Well, this Mittens is a character and a half! I actually call him Mittens the Monkey Cat. He LOVES water. When I turn the kitchen sink on, he jumps in and takes a shower. He has also jumped into the tub with me several times. I know, weird. No other cat of mine has EVER liked water.

Well, this Mittens, also likes to wash his paws in the water bowl, so I have to keep a water bowl for paw cleaning by the food…and then another water bowl elsewhere for drinking.

After eating, Mittens dips his paws in the water bowl …even the hind ones!!! I had to get a special bowl that he couldn’t tip over, because that often happened when he was washing the hind ones. :frowning:

We don’t let him outside because we’re scared to death that he’ll jump into the pool - not realizing the depth.

He used to push out the window screens to get outside, so we had to change the screens so he can’t do that. One night he did get outside and when we finally found him, he was stuck about 50 feet in the air in a tree…too terrified to come down. Luckily the tree had a slim trunk so we were able to tie a rope and bend the tree down to pull him out. Ugh!

He also has a fascination with anything that is a circle…rubber bands, rings, bracelets, lids, etc. I once caulked a circle around the laundry tub drain, and he pried it out and played with it for days.

He will also let you carry him on his back in your arms like a baby…also odd for a cat.

And, don’t leave a drink uncovered, he’ll drink or dip his paws in when you’re not looking. He’s fascinated with the smell of wine, tea, coffee, and soda. So, we use cover all drinks.

And, he’ll eat an entire rose flower, so I bring in petals from a bush that doesn’t get any pesticides. He eats the petals like they’re potato chips.

My other kitten, Nala, has her own weird habits…such as rolling around in the dirty laundry. That kind of grosses us all out. We also have to check the washer and dryer before use because she will crawl in. :frowning: ( I remember the thread about that problem with another poster!!)

Anyway…share what odd thing your pet does. :)

My son served his Ragdoll kitty water in a crystal wine glass from the very beginning, and now that is what the cat expects! Only the finest…

Batman, our black lab, will play in the sprinkler for as long as we let the water run. One day we forgot it was on and he was out there jumping over the oscillating water for 3 hours. We’ve had neighbors driving by stop their cars to watch him play in the sprinkler all by himself.

:p

^^^

Wow…

My neighbors walk their dogs at night and their cats follow along behind in a perfect line on sidewalk…as if they’re on leashes, too. They look like a parade…dog, adult, dog, adult, cat, cat, cat.

My Jack Russell/chihuahua (aka a Jackwawa) insists on eating in the dining room with us. This involves going out to the sun porch, grabbing a large amount of kibble in his mouth, transporting it to the corner of the dining room and delicately eating one bit at a time. If we eat out, he has an elaborate ritual that involves lining up his six tennis balls next to the food bowl, separating one from the “herd”, batting it with his feet while he growls, putting it back “in line” and only then…taking a bite of food. This goes on, one ball and bite at a time.

Our Corgi does not like other animals, even of the cartoon variety. If there is an animal of any type on TV, she goes crazy barking and huffing and trying to get at it. The same can be said of any animals that that happen to pass by our home when she’s laying in wait at the front windows. She hates hot air balloons, too, and we frequently have them flying over our home. We used to take her to the dog park a lot, trying to get her to be more social, but she would bark at all the dogs before we go in and then hide behind us once we were in the park. I’m sure a pet psychologist, if we chose to utilize one, would tell us it is her fear of other animals that makes her behave this way. She’s nine years old now, is not going to change, and we’re just going to have to live with it. Oh … thunderstorms, too. Between Benadryl, Dramamine and a medication recently prescribed by her physician, we hope to get more sleep.

She loves to play and still acts like a puppy in that respect. She’ll chase a ball as long as someone will throw it and, once a person tires of that, she’ll roll one down the steps just so she can chase it down. She does mind pretty well, though. When we feed her, we tell her to “wait”. She will not eat until we tell her it’s okay. I can tell her to wait, put her food in her dish, go upstairs to get something, come back down and she’ll still be waiting. I wish she would mind that well when we’re watching TV and tell her to hush when she sees an animal.

We have a goldendoodle that will not go outside for any reason without a ‘baby’ in her mouth. She carries them on walks, wherever. Usually beanie babies because they are small, but DH has taken to getting her big floppy ones too. She never tears them up. When they have to be washed she sits beside the washing machine and waits for them. She watches TV and gets quite excited when another animal is on. She is terribly afraid of any loud noises (thunder and fireworks send her up a wall). She shakes for hours.

We have one cat who thinks she is a dog. She is known as the mayor on our street. She will follow strangers (people she doesn’t know) down the street to get attention or she will literally walk in front of people walking with their kids or strollers down the street and plop herself down and roll on her back waiting for a belly rub or pat on the back. She also likes to sleep in sinks. Another cat loves popcorn, goldfish and cheese doodles.

Hey! I have a cat that loves popcorn, and one that just plops down in front of you with no warning (we call her Narcolepsy Cat, because it looks like she’s suddenly collapsing or falling asleep.)

Then we have a cat who steals random paper things - a bill left on the kitchen table, a receipt on the refrigerator door - and hides them in some secret cat hidey-hole in the basement. I cannot tell you how many Chinese take-out menus we’ve lost over the past 2 years.

Our miniature Australian Shepard can open our screen doors and let himself in and out.
He also likes to put all four paws in his water dish and take a quick bath.

When my boxer wants in from out back he nudges one of the plastic deck chairs on the downstairs deck to make noise and then sits there looking in the window where he can see us come down the stairs to open the door. If he doesn’t see us within a minute or so he nudges it again to get our attention. He’s using them like a doorbell.

My previous boxer, after finding a fallen avocado in the back of the perfect ripeness, i.e. soft, would then carry it up to a particular spot and then somehow eat all of the avocado except the seed and the skin - it looked like he perfectly peeled it somehow. My current boxer also loves avocados but he eats it all, including the skin, except for the seed and isn’t as picky on it being as ready to eat (soft).

Our beloved cat Gus (may he rest in peace) used to collect small metal objects (screws, nails, a needle once) from around the house and deposit them in his food bowl!

I had a cat like that, she would jump in the tub with you given the chance.

My toy poodle on the other hand… lets see:

She drinks out of glasses (this started after she started having sezures and she wouldn’t drink so we introduced the glass… and you know… it stuck)

She will tell you when she wants dinner and she will bug you until you do so (on a special diet, she eats 3x a day)

She will watch tv…

She will ‘bury’ her food in the towel its on.

She will argue back with you…

I could go on.

I love this thread!

Our dog has a basket that we throw his toys in when we clean up. Well, he’s started putting “forbidden” items (magazine inserts, other dogs toys, etc.) into the basket himself! I think that is pretty darn smart!

*We have a goldendoodle that will not go outside for any reason without a ‘baby’ in her mouth. *

My Yorkie/chihuahua is like that. Missy has to have a little stuffed toy in her mouth when she goes outside. When H is out there cleaning the pool, she slowly and coyly pushes it into the pool, then he has to fish it out…then she repeats…acting like she has no idea how it gets into the pool.

As soon as Missy is let out of her crate in the morning, she goes to the “toy basket” to get a small toy out and carries it in her mouth for comfort. We call it her “binky”. (I’m always washing binkies!)

*momtwo collegekids:

What do your new kittens look like? Your new Mittens sounds like it has some Turkish Van and Ragdoll in the background. Are you east or west of the Rockies? *

Mittens is a beautiful grey stripe tabby with makeup…really lovely face…smoky white under the chin. But, I do think he has some Ragdoll in him because he’s so flopsy when you pick him up. We’re east of the Rockies.

Nala (who isn’t a littermate) is a light orange tabby who looked just like Baby Nala in the Lion King…hence the name. Nala definitely has some Siamese in her…small head, Siamese facial structure, delicate features, petite body, etc. I have to feed her separately because Mittens is a piggy.

Our miniature Australian Shepard can open our screen doors and let himself in and out.

My H couldn’t believe his sister’s cat during a visit. That cat can open doors…not the latch type…the round knob kind!

The sun on our deck is always moving due to tree shadows, the dog will come and stand at the glass door staring at you until you go out and move his bed into the sun.

Our puppy also hides his treats around the house, under the bed, under other things, and along the baseboards or other straight lines, as in where the carpet meets the wood, or even under the body of someone reclining on the bed, etc. Really funny

My semi-adopted tabby cat will come to eat on my front porch and then sit in front of the glass door mocking my dog, who is trying to get through it. He walks out of view and then pokes just his head back, or sometimes he will hide and put one paw in view. It’s hilarious. Kitty understands the solidity of the door. Doggy does not.

When my oldest son was a baby we had a cat that used to go on walks with us. I’d push the stroller and the cat would walk along with us. People driving by would sometimes stop and stare.

My husband had a cat who would jump onto our pizza and eat the mushrooms.

Our cat now loves stinky clothes. Especially when husband or sons come back from the gym she will roll around the socks and clothes it’s almost erotic!

That is smart! Our dog loves taking her toys out of the basket and playing. I wish I could teach her to put them away afterwards. If my husband gives her a treat right before we leave the house, she will not eat it. We’ll catch her retrieving it from a hiding place when we get home and then she’ll eat it. Our previous dog, an Australian Shepherd mix, loved pigs ears and would often hide them under DD’s pillow. DD always knew when there was a pigs ear under her pillow because she could smell it … ewww!
