Hi everyone! I’m a current sophomore so I realize I have quite a bit of time but I was wondering if my college list looks reasonable given my scores/GPA/extracurriculars.
-GPA: 4.0 unweighted and 4.76 weighted; it might go up or down a bit but I really don’t expect it to change significantly in the next two years. To put in perspective, valedictorians at our school tend to have somewhere in the 4.85-4.92 range.
-Scores on old SAT, which I took in November without much significant preparation: 2180 composite; CR: 690; Math: 700; Writing: 790, with perfect score on multiple choice and essay subscore of 8.
-I will be taking the new SAT in June. My practice score was a 1420 but I think I can get it up to a 1450 on the real thing fairly easily with a bit of math review.
-I will be doing the full IB program in junior and senior years. By the end of high school, I will have 4 years of math, 4 years of English, 4 (or 5, if you count Spanish 1 in 8th grade) years of a language, and 6 total science courses (1 each freshman and sophomore year and will be taking two a year in junior and senior years). Maximum number of AP/IB/honors courses except for history, since I will be taking regular U.S. rather than APUSH next year and dropping history senior year by fulfilling the requirement over the summer.
Extracurriculars:
-JV lacrosse freshman and sophomore years but not continuing next two years
-Mock trial starting sophomore year and continuing for the rest of high school
-Girl Scout for 10 years, 12 once I apply, and completing a fairly extensive GS Gold Award. My project deals with human trafficking awareness and aftercare and is what occupies most of my time currently. Example activities/results: bringing in speakers to my school and organizing an assembly that will ultimately reach 1800 students; speaking at conferences and in front of my church on human trafficking, publishing an awareness brochure/guide for students and distributing it to schools/our county govt.; compiling kits of basic necessities for recently rescued trafficking survivors in my area. Anyway, definitely my main EC and something I care very much about.
-Staff writer for a web magazine where I write articles on various topics but often human rights issues or world events
-various other church speaking opportunities or mission trips and school activities
-future activities that I will likely/hopefully have: student trainer in our school’s athletic trainer’s office assisting in basic medical care and taping, summer job, NHS member and tutor, CSF lifetime member, maybe an ASB position but probably not
Wow that was a lot and much more detail than I intended! If anyone’s read this far, thank you, you’re wonderful. Here’s my college list, in order of selectivity, not of how much I want to apply. I know I need to expand it and make it more realistic.
- Stanford (obviously very much a reach for everyone; honestly not sure if I want to apply anyway)
- Johns Hopkins (same as above except it’s my dream school and I want to apply ED but I don’t know if I even have a chance)
- Cornell
- Georgetown
- University of Virginia (I’m out of state so admissions are considerably more difficult)
- UC Davis
- University of Washington
There’s some other schools I’m looking at as well: UCSB, UCSD, UNC Chapel Hill, Pepperdine, etc. that I just haven’t visited or done enough research on yet to know if I’m really interested or not.
