I am 33 years old and I have spent the last 4 years at my Community College. I am looking to transfer to a 4 year college. However I am concerned that I have spent too much time at my CC and admissions would be turned off by it.
I have been out of school for so long that when I returned I tried to start from the bottom up again. I have over 100 units. I have received 1 B and 1 C. My only extracurricular activity has been being and Student Instructor for a chemistry class. Other than that my previous work experience has been working at fine dining restaurants where I was a head party chef.
Will my long stint at community college hurt my chances of getting accepted to a UC?
My guess is that they’ll assume that, as a 33 year old, there were other things going on in your life beyond school, and that you went part time.
And I can’t imagine anyone holding that against you.
“Head party chef” is not a title lightly given; you must be good at what you do!
Are your 100+ units all UC transferable? Are they quarter units or semester units? UC’s do have a cap on the # of transferable units: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/transfer/advising/transferring-credits/index.html
Also several UC campuses will not accept High Unit Junior/Senior transfers. Check page 31: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/quick-reference-2017.pdf
