My chances of getting into a prestigious medical program

Hello,

I’m a junior this year and i was wondering what my chances for getting into a medical program would be just based on my raw scores right now. I really want to compare this to NEOUCOM or Boston University. So please let me know what you honestly believe. thanks so much.

Well you have great EC’s & your GPA is good…the only thing really demerit-ing you are your ACT’s but you already know that. Did you try taking the SAT’s?

These medical 7 or 8 year straight programs are extremely competitive – more so than getting into the school itself – and although you have a list of extra-curriculars, your ACT scores need much improvement (much. I normally don’t say this, but your standardized test scores will be one of the MOST important components for your admission to a BA/MD program and these programs are usually looking for very high scores. A 23 is not really going to get you anywhere). Plus, although you have good volunteer work for anywhere else, only one of them is related to medical education.

It’s a good one - research is always good, but you must understand that these BA/MD programs are looking for exceptional students - one that they have little doubt that they will not only be able to complete the requirements for their bachelor’s degree and medical school in a full year less than they would normally, but also that these students will STICK with their love of medicine throughout the 7-8 years without wavering (most pre-med students don’t stay pre-med through school). Having more experience as a medical volunteer at a hospital or hospice or something similar, including a summer program with physicians or shadowing a physician at a hospital, will look better. And many of your peers will have that kind of experience.

I suggest that while you don’t discount your chances of applying to BU and the NAUCOM program, please also apply to traditional university programs and consider going to the traditional route to the MD.

Yes, I have taken the SATS. I got a 2000 with writing. And as for Juliett, I agree that as of right now, my chances are not that great, but again i received a 28 (not a 23?) and I know many people that have improved their scores significantly. However, as for the going the traditional route…could you offer me an opinion on schools that are known for a good medical program that go the tradition route? I live in columbus, so I was thinking of having Ohio State University as my backup/fall-back plan. Do you know of any others?

Union College has a great medical program albeit I’m pretty sure a bit competitive to get into (I think). The reason I say this is because one of my family friends was accepted into Brown, Columbia, ? other Ivy League but got rejected from the med program at Brown which I think was his first choice… He chose to go to Union so I’m assuming it’s a great school because the kid is brilliant.

Thanks so much, I will definitely look into that.

any other ideas? I know duke has a good program as well, but I’m afraid that my GPA will be too low.
