Explanation of freshman year grades:
I had a girlfriend that moved to Pennsylvania and became depressed–eventually suicidal. I thought it was my job to help her, and I ran away from home to “rescue” my friend as soon as freshman year ended. My distress during that time was reflected in my poor report card for that year. When I was brought back home, I was sent to a psychologist and she [the psych] helped me turn myself around, understand that it wasn’t my responsibility to save others, and have a clear understanding of my life and academic goals. (This is what my college essay is about, by the way)

Wow, that’s a huge upward grade trend, congrats on all your success so far!

I think UMiami, UF, Carnegie Mellon are all in your range right now. If you could raise that SAT score a hundred points, and I’m sure you can, all your others schools would be in your range as well! You have great ECs, great grades, but average to below average test scores for those schools (although those 800s in Math2 and Spanish will look very good).

Thank you NeoEpisteme. Do you think an upward grade trend accompanied by the essay I’m writing give a boost to my application, or do you think it would be considered the same or below an application with As throughout all four years?

landy, you’re a great example for upward trend. Would you attribute your freshman year performance to adjustment-related reasons? Cuz if it is, maybe your guidance counselor (or teacher) could point to your successful adjustment or transition and focus on that as a positive in your recommendations. Or you could elaborate on that in your essays. good luck, landy.

An upward trend is nice but it will never turn Bs into As.
