My Chances

I’m half African-American and half Thai

SAT1: 2100 (700 Reading 680 Math 720 Writing)
SAT2: 610 French, 700 US History, 620 Math IIC
AP: 4 US History (though I didn’t take the AP course), 5 Environmental Science, 4 Psychology
GPA: 4.17 (Weighted) 3.65 (Unweighted)
Rank: 26 (Class Size: 663)

My parents own and operate a small family restaurant, which has been a large part of my past 5 years. I assisted in the design and construction and I work regularly for 30-40 hours per week. Aside from that I’m involved in three clubs at school, of which I am president of one (National French Honor Society). I play three instruments, and have traveled abroad extensively.

How are my chances of admission to the following schools?

Pitzer College
Princeton University
Stanford University (Early Action)
Brown University
Claremont McKenna College
Swarthmore College
UC Berkeley

get you SATs up, and you’ll have a good chance at half of them. Your ECs aren’t the most impressive around, so that may pose a problem. but your dedication to the family restaurant should make a pretty interesting application, so use it to your advantage!

You have a very good chance at those universities, considering your situation and AA status. Princeton is still a high reach though, but the others are not so much of one. Pitzer should accept you and CMC also. Berkeley is likely to, since you’re in-state [I’m assuming]. Brown is sort of unpredictable. I think you have a really good shot at Stanford, but you need to bring up your SAT II’s. Good luck!

The only school I can comment on is Pitzer. Your scores are a bit high for Pitzer and unless you can demonstrate that you REALLY want to go there the school will probably see itself as a safety on your list. (It’s kind of obvious.) I would not be surprised to see Pitzer wait list you.

“I’m half African-American and half Thai”

like Tiger Woods :)

in response to post #4, if they did, that would be like tufts syndrome

You work 30-40 hours a week during the school year?

yeah i’m usually there wednesday, and sunday nights from 5-11 and friday and saturday nights from 5-12, sometimes i go in thursday. i do admit it’s very tough, but i guess it’s an effort on my behalf to see our family business succeed.

i forgot to mention that i just finished 4 weeks at pomona college’s academically rigorous summer scholars enrichment program, if it makes any difference

look i highly doubt that your scores are so “high” that pitzer will waitlist you. Personally i think your scores are fair. I mean i had a 2300 and Pitzer didnt waitlist me and i still got accepted. Definitely, what you need to do is write great essays for college admission like how you will contribute to the school and regarding maybe what you will majoring/ your passion. Some more college admission tips, i think you also need to do some personal interviews with various alumni’s to show your interest to the school.

Definately Good luck with your Admission cycle

Many thanks. Actually I was just about to leave to go schedule an interview at Pomona College.

I understand that you work quite often, which explains your complete lack of ECs. It’s too bad your scores are not a bit higher, it would show that you have promise once you were freed of a job. I can’t comment on the rest but, Brown-fickle decisions scores a bit low, and you don’t have that artsy feel.
Princeton-Scores too low and no ECs to compensate
Stanford-Scores too ow and no ECs to compensate
Berkely-slight reach.

1MX, what defines an artsy feel?

I don’t think you can really say either way about Pitzer- your SATs are above their average but your gpa is exactly their average, and your EC’s are kind of sparse and common (no disrespect meant!)
