My chances

I gave it a shot in the other section, no luck. And all I really am concerned with is BC anyway,so

Black Male
3.7 GPA
2000 SAT (CR 690, M 670, W 640)
720 US History
720 Math I (yeah, probably one of my bigger mistakes)
Did pretty well in the competition for the PSAT scores in the African American circle thing, did decent in the reg (commendation I think).

Two high schools, probably had a 3.8 or 3.9 there
Ranked #1 in first high school, out of 200

Ranked 14th or so out of 400 in second high school.

AP/H
First school had zero options. I was on track for highest regents diploma easily, did accelerated classes (you just skip a year) for every possible class.
2cd
11 - APUSH, H Anat&Phys
12 - AP French V, AP Calc, AP phys, Honors Civics

EC’s
Varsity Swimming, Four years, captain. Our team smokes Conference, places at states top 10.
Club swimming, one year. National Y team.
These both total almost 25 hours a week. I always feel like my EC comes across as thin, but I really do put almost all of my free time into this. Between fund raising, training, and especially summer workouts, there are no hours left.

French club for two years
JV Baseball for two years

Employment
I’m a lifeguard and a swim lesson instructor year round, totaling about 35 hours a week in the summer and about ten during the school year.

Awards
NHS
Scholar athlete
Honor roll etc (changes names at different schools)

Essays were all pretty good, lots of editing and revising.
My GC rec was amazing (got to read it)
One teacher rec will be very good (didn’t get to read it, but students all but beg for her letters every year, she limits it to her top 15 or so students).

Possible Hooks: Athlete, URM, child of disabled war veteran, did two tours in Iraq, moved all over the country my entire life (6 states, 15 or so locations) all with consistent grades and activities.

Although I am not an expert on anything, you have a very strong application & your SAT’s are in the middle of the middle 50 % scoring range so with great essays & recs I’m confident you can probably get some merit too. Have you considered BU, I definetly think you’d have a great chance there. Sucks the deadline passed, hopefully you applied to other schools that are great as well! Good Luck!

visited BU, wasn’t feeling it. But I have a few insured acceptances, BC is just my top school that I feel I have a realistic shot at.

I think you have a good shot. Good luck!

You’ll get in. BC needs more african americans and have been recruiting heavilly.

As ab African American young women I think you will definetly get in; like the person above me said they NEED african americans. Its my top choice too! I did extremely bad on the SAT which will ddefinetly set me back but you are in the mid 50% of scores. Good luck!

p.s. when I read ur post before I didnt read that you were AA which will definetly play into part because when you apply the AHANA office takes the minority students pile according to my cousin whom previously graduated and they chose the strongest candidates so that they can recruite more urm.

o & as for not feeling BU. thats cool because at first i didnt like it either but they give good merit scholarships. What other schools are you applying too & are you from the New England area?

Yep, I live in CT. My top choices (other than BC) are Cornell, Tufts and Brown. All pretty decent reaches at the least. Holy Cross too, UConn or Quinnipiac are my safeties.

Yea, I went to visit Cornell and it’s gorgeous! But very cold! (lol) I’m applying to Holy Cross too, but very expensive (next to BC); hopefully they give good financial aid. Cornell give’s good financial aid especially because of their new zero loan policy for several income brackets. Good Luck! :)

I just have a hunch that you’ll get in.

I really think you will get in, especially with being way within the top 10% of your class with a somewhat low gpa. I also feel like you will definitely get in Holy Cross, and you have a good chance at Tufts (60%), and even a solid chance at Cornell and Brown (30%). Overall, you are looking solid, and I would think BC is a match (80%).

Also, are you being recruited by any of them for swimming? I know these schools are extremely competitive with that, but I was just wondering.

Unfortunately, no. I wasn’t sure where I was at until this season, so I never really looked into it. Except now, I’m looking through their times, and I’m already beating several of their swimmers, and still on pace for dropping serious time. Any idea on what I can do with that?

It might possibly be too late; sorry, I don’t know much about top recruiting (I was only recruited for some D3 schools for tennis), but as I said earlier, you still have a good chance at these schools, so it shouldn’t make too much of a difference. I would talk to your GC or coach asap.

Well they don’t do scholarships for men (swimming) anyway. I wasn’t concerned about that, just getting my name out there with the coach etc. I suppose I’ll probably just ask where I stand. With zero scholarships, I see no disadvantage in just walking on anway (hope) lol

youre about average at BC so its a good math for you, most of the freshman class will have similar stats which means you have about a 50% chance of acceptance, so just write really good essays and you should have nothing to worry about
