My chances?

Hi! I’m gonna be senior in high school this fall at a private catholic school in northern California, and Davis is one of my top choices right now. I would really appreciate it if I got some people to tell me my chances.

UC GPA: 3.9
SAT Reasoning: 2010
SAT Subjects:

  • 540 English Lit
  • 560 Bio E
  • 580 Math II
    ACT: not taken yet
    National Hispanic Scholar
Senior Classes: Honors Physics, AP English Lit, Precalc, Psychology, Civics, Cultural Anthropology, World Religions / Senior Synthesis (religion courses are required at my school), Band, Honors Choir

Gah, I know I really screwed up my subject tests. In my defense, it was my birthday AND the first day of summer so I was a bit distracted. But no excuses, I know. I’ll be retaking them in the fall.

Extra Curriculars:

  • 4 years in Concert Choir, 1 year Bass Section Leader
  • 3 years in the A Cappella group at my school, 1 year Co-Pres
  • 2 years playing mallet percussion in the Concert / Marching Band
  • 3 years as an active member of the Asian Pacific Islander Club
  • 2 years in the Student Coalition on Respectful Education, 1 year in a leadership position
  • 1 year as a Peer Helper (freshmen help group)
  • Studied Kajukenbo for 8 years, and am now a 2nd Degree Black Belt. Stopped after freshmen year due to schedule issues and time constraints.

Volunteer Work:

  • Recent trip to the Philippines to volunteer at a free medical clinic for children and families on a remote island in the province of Bohol. We also visited and helped out at a battered women’s and children’s center.
  • A couple volunteer trips to various Crisis Centers near my school and a trip to feed the homeless in San Francisco.

So yea, I feel pretty… average. I dunno I just feel like I won’t get in because the competition is so stiff.
Davis is my dream school, but also what are my chances at UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly SLO, Santa Clara, or Loyola Marymount?
I intend on majoring in Civil Engineering, but would you guys recommend going in undeclared?
Lastly, any safety schools you guys would recommend?

i assume you are Hispanic.
Your gpa is good. sat scores are good.
extracurriculars are good.

Just make sure you keep your grades up in senior year, and write an essay that is Extraordinary about your life.

Engineering is a wild major, so i would go undeclared to be Very Safe. But thats just my opinion.

well, with all those conditions met, you shouldn’t have a problem in UC Davis.
Same for UC Irvine. Santa Clara shouldn’t be a problem.

Cal Poly has a super engineering thing, so applying there under C.E. would be a tough-risk.

To be safe, I would take your SATIIs again and try to score above 700 or so

this isnt just to make you feel better but youre pretty much in.
im a davis student, sophomore now, and my stats were no where near as great as yours and i barely got in. my gpa was lower than 3.0 nonweighted, i got high scores on APs and 2080 on SAT, 710 korean subjectm 800 math subject. but i took heavy courses and went to rank #30+ high school in the nation but still my gpa was weak and not much extracurricular so youll be fine. so yeah just retake SAT 2’s no doubt and everything else looks great.

thanks for the help everyone.
do you really think it would be easier to get in as undecided? i read somewhere that undecided is in the top 5 most popular majors at this school.

also, i was looking into University of Portland as sort of a “safety” school. it seems really nice, and i doubt the engineering majors are nearly as competitive as the UCs.

thanks again guys, i know wherever i end up i’ll be happy… hopefully

@toohopeful

I went to the same school as you…Sr Synth is exclusive to our school I’m pretty sure.

My stats were slightly lower than yours, but I took a much more AP intensive Sr year. I made it in. You should be fine if you put some serious effort into your essay and make it personal yet witty.

A word of warning, if you have Graham for AP Lit…you’ll be working really hard. If you have Daane for Hn Physics…get on her good side, FAST. I hope I’m correct in guessing you’re a spartan.

EDIT:
YES you are! I saw peer helpers, reference to Monument Crisis Center, St Anthony’s, API, SCORE, etc…! Hello fellow brother!

I’m sure that you’re into UCI, Santa Clara, and LMU. UCSB and Cal Poly SLO were a little funky with admissions from our school this year, but you’re a shoe-in.

I think you will not have a problem with the schools you want to get into, except maybe Cal Poly. I wouldn’t apply undeclared just in case. Write a couple stellar essays, keep up your grades, maybe re-take your SAT subjects, and you’re good! :)

On the contrary, the College of Engineering seems to be one of the hardest college for admissions from seeing the boards in the past few years. I remember counselors saying it was easy to transfer into a different major after the first quarter, so if you feel safe, Undeclared is fine. You can also do Civil Engineering and a wildly different secondary major.

thanks everyone! yea i really hope i can bring my subject tests up or at least score above 30 on the ACT. -____-

@shoyon: woah, random! didn’t really expect to have a fellow spartan comment on this. so are you attending Davis? where else did you make it in?

and also, would you guys recommend choosing one of their least popular majors and possibly switching into engineering after first quarter? is it difficult to switch? i’m just afraid of being behind in the courses required for engineering if i choose this path… but whatever gets me in i guess! lol

you can go in undecided, but take courses in engineering.
like i declared a major in the College of Letters and Sciences, but i want to do another major, so im taking courses in that major instead.

Yeah toohopeful, happy coincidence. I was in the '10 class and will be starting in the fall. Since we went to the same school and your stats are slightly higher than mine you have a really good chance. Just make sure those essays are strong, get a good friend or trusted teacher to look them over a couple times.

I got in on Biochem. I heard its somewhat easier to get in on that, but I chose that because it’s what I’m interested in.

personally I think it reflects better on your application if you pick a major…mine roughly tied in with my essay and I believe a lot of others did the same type of thing

I think you’re pretty good, just get your sat 2s up and you’ll set : )

GPA average this year was like a 4.1

But your SAT is good so I think that might help.

Try to raise your GPA and basically your SAT II scores are abysmal, try them again and try a different set of tests if possible.

i got into the engineering dept with pretty similar stats. you don’t need to worry too much :)
