My D is obsessed with one school! Anyone else go through this?

Yeah, I was joking about how there are no BFA in MT programs in VT in reference to the post about how someone worked it out to be born/live in Ohio where there are a bunch of MT schools in the region!

Honestly, it wasn’t so bad for us because between 8 schools, we had to fly to three (but only involved two flights and a rental car) and could drive to 5. I figure we didn’t live near Unifieds (7 hours by car) and if we are going to drive there, we may as well drive to campuses (and not all schools are in Unifieds anyway). But the other thing is that we wanted to do complete visits to all schools as we had only visited half of them prior to auditions. Truth be told, I had another round of flights because we had visited U of Michigan in September too.

In any case, I think it is toughest for those on the West Coast who are seeking MT programs. Truly, the majority of programs are on the Eastern half of the country. So, surely it is harder and more costly for the audition process. There is the LA Unifieds, but that is not exactly close to everyone on the West Coast! My niece applied to BFA in Acting programs and she lives in Alaska! They did all their auditions in LA and San Francisco.

Hahaaaaa @mom4bwayboy I figured being here on Long Island my MT D would definitely want NYU, Pace, Marymount, Hartt, Montclair, even Columbia and I would not have too far to travel at all. But No, she wants a traditional campus. Perhaps being in the city all the time took the excitement away from her, she doesnt feel like it would be new to her. Idk but she wants great academics, the sororities, big football games, and a BA. There are no NY schools on her list or NJ or CT !!! Its crazy to live this close to so many great programs and yet we have one close-ish-Muhlenberg (only 2 hours a way) the others are Virginia, Florida, DC, possibly Chicago. I think she is done with the city and with the cold weather.

@joyfulmama - it’s funny, isn’t it. I live in the heart of traditional college campus world- and my D was completely focused on the urban experience. They never make it easy- do they?

@toowonderful I guess its the grass is always greener thing… I am happy she knows what she wants and is willing to go against the grain of a BFA to stay true to her academic nerdy side

S’s earliest list HAD to be all urban - including “backyard playground” CCM (could’ve lived at home and ridden the city bus to that one) and east coast schools. But he ended up at a school that is not much more grand than a community college near a highway interchange, with a tangle of retail “heaven” in the middle of fields surrounding a nearby military air base. Happy as a clam - or maybe a crawdad around here. Fall color is not quite as awesome as what you east coasters get, but it’s pretty darn nice. And is there ANY other campus that in the midwest or north that was smart enough to build a tunnel system that interconnects the entire campus?? (I went to a VERY large campus in Michigan - they had steam tunnel system, but it wasn’t meant for student traverse.) Of course, that means faculty and staff have to show up on days that other midwesterners would call “snow days”. It’s kinda weird, @Joyfulmama to have no football team at a school that size, but all the theater/film kids seem to keep their weekends very busy. Now that I think about it, does not having a college football team damage your psyche? Will they go through the rest of there lives feeling like “other” because they didn’t share in that universal American experience? Whoa. . .

You are keeping me laughing this morning @mom4bwayboy !!I agree she will be way too busy for football or sororities but its in her head right now as a want so I am riding the wave. She literally was looking through a recent JMU booklet and as she turned each page was saying yes, yes and when she got to the football stadium packed with people, she stopped and pointed to the page saying, that’s it! That’s what I want. This is the kid who despite our hardest efforts in our football loving family could care less about watching or going to NFL games with us!! These kids!!!

This has nothing to do with the thread topic but can we talk about football?

I had no idea that the entire town of Lincoln Nebraska (as well as the entire state) wears red and U of Nebraska shirts on game day?

We were at Nebraska Wesleyan a couple of weeks ago and apparently didn’t get the memo - even NWU (who has their own football team) wears Husker red shirts.

We went to Perkins after D’s cabaret and some elderly gentlemen yelled to my husband when we walked in “Did you leave the game early? What’s the score?”

After my husband said he wasn’t at the game, the man looked like we killed his litter of puppies.

(And yes, we were appropriately shamed enough to outfit the whole family in U of Nebraska wear. We know no one who even goes to that school.)

My S has organized an all-acting major fantasy football league at his not very sports oriented conservatory and went to a Bears pre-season game a few weeks ago. If they love football, they will fit it in.

Gosh, Nebraska football. It’s like a virus. I went to the University of Kansas and Nebraska was in the Big back then. When my Jayhawks played the Huskers, the whole freakin’ state came to Lawrence. I usually left town on those weekends to avoid it. Ha Ha!

Having grown up practicing the Maize and Blue religion, I nearly keeled over when we visited son on an OSU game weekend. I ate breakfast surrounded by a sea of red. My husband the Mainer, did not understand my discomfort.

*Otterbein is located in a city adjacent to Columbus

Living near maize and blue land I still was shocked my first weekend in Nebraska during football season. I also shouldn’t have been surprised when my daughter wouldn’t look at any Ohio schools…lol

@entertainersmom , I just came on to post something about that!

Ohio is all red and white with Ohio State–especially, unsurprisingly, in central Ohio. It’s insane (but fun)! You’re a traitor if you are not enthusiastically OSU, lol!

On the plus side, for people like me who are not really into football or basketball, if you’re around Columbus during a game, it’s a great time to do almost anything else if you’re not going to watch the game!

Go Bucks!
O-H…!

(Even though I’m not a super fan, I’d be remiss if I didn’t chant those last lines! Besides, someone might turn me in! )

Call me a traitor- (and I have lived most of my life in ohio) but I didn’t GO to Ohio State, so I refuse to show any enthusiasm - it even interest for them. Also the “The” Ohio State thing (which started around the time I was in college) has always bugged me.

Oh, I’m with you, @toowonderful , and I’ve lived my entire life (outside of part of college) in Ohio! My post was largely sarcastic; I should’ve made that clearer. I really don’t care about most sports or OSU (unless one of my kids decides to attend, of course).

I do like the way the band performs, though!

I think I’m caught up on this thread that started out about school obsession and has morphed into football…

@mom4bwayboy - I graduated from a college with no football team… I have no regrets! I’m your boy won’t either!

And the rivalry!! I was born in Ohio, and moved to Michigan in elementary school - 2 funny stories:

1 - My mom was recently at the UMich Health Center (which is fabulous, btw) and my sister walks in wearing her Ohio State hoodie. I still can’t believe she was that bold! LOL (And for those that are wondering - unlike my sister, I’m a Michigan fan - GO BLUE!)

2 - My non MT D is in grad school at Ohio U - and spent all spring assuring all her hometown friends that she wasn’t going to THAT Ohio school.

Our MT D is in Cleveland Browns/Cavaliers/Indians country now - and last fall we couldn’t figure out what all the orange and brown was all over town. (We figured it out.)

My college had a football team- which lost every game the years I was there…maybe it would have been better NOT to have one

My kid’s college does NOT have a football (or most other kinds of ball) team- she’s fine. They do have regular events take place in Madison Square Garden- does that count for sports? :stuck_out_tongue:

Every kid wants something different out of their college experience…again, no one way…

One benefit our MT-but-not-sports-fan D reaped from attending a school with sports teams was getting to sing the anthem to large crowds and on national TV a couple times. Good practice for something, right?

Sports and MT can peacefully coexist and even enjoy one another. D’s MT friends at Michigan all go to the football games. They love it! Many of her friends at Penn State also go to games. And some friends at CCM go to the University of Cincinnati games as well. So you can be a talented MT and still have fun going to football games! They don’t have to be mutually exclusive. And good point @MomCares about the performance opportunities. Our local university uses students and teachers from the opera program and the various award-winning acapella groups to sing the national anthem at many of their sports events. And the football players helped with set up for a fundraising event. for the opera guild. I think it’s great when they can crossover into each others areas.

I dunno, I still identify with those Funkie Winkerbean cartoon strips (circa 19??) about the antagonism between the band director and the football coach. That was a very real schism in my formative years during marching band season. You’re telling me singer/dancer/actors and large stadiums full of crazed fans all wearing the same color can co-exist?. . . .
