I am considering going to McGill which is really close to the US. The distance is not the problem. They are just worried about what rights I have in another country. My dad is an immigrant from a country not like America or Canada so he is against me ever leaving America. How do I convince them that Canada is not some communist country where random American students get held in prison for no reason?

Are you a US citizen? In any case, I think you can tell him that Canada’s human rights record is better than America’s

yes i am a US citizen

Montreal is very cosmopolitan and i heard they embrace internationals. Why don’t you tell him to look it up, he may just change his mind. Good luck

haha I can guarantee that there are more communists in Harvard than there are in McGill. It is a very good school in a beautiful city with a very diverse, tolerant student body.

When I saw the title of your post, my first thought was how unfair your dad was being. However in reading your post, I changed my mind. It sounds like your dad and your family had an awful experience in their homeland. Family members may have been killed or imprisoned. Be tolerant of him. He may have been through things that he never confided to you.

As the other posters have said, there is nothing to fear in Canada for an American, or anyone else. You would be a lot safer from crime in Montreal than in any big American city too. Have him read this thread.

See if he is willing to go on a family vacation to Montreal this summer with you, assuming your parents have legal status in the US. Tour McGill and talk to the people in Montreal. It should change his mind.
