my dad used to work at Washington University (please read)

my dad used to work at Washington University for a few years, and my counselor said that may help. i wanted to add this info on the common aplication, but i didnt see any place where i could add that without it looking so obvious that i just wanted to school to know so i might have a better chance. should i mention this on my application in the first place? im not sure how connections to the school in the past besides alumni relations relate to the admisions process. please reply!

I think they ask on the Pre-App if you have Alumni or staff relations

Wash U especially probably wants to know things like that because it shows you have a connection to the area and are serious about it. A lot of people get rejected bc they haven’t shown a special connection

it is definately on the pre-application sheet- i don’t think you could miss that section but if you have already filled it out, you can always contact the admissions office to make changes

You could also work the info in through one of the essays but explaining how you first became aware of WashU — a parent worked there. Maybe you visited that parent at work and the university made an impression…it could be a nice anecdote as part of an essay.

on the preapplication sheet, there was only a place where you list parents who currently work there, there was no place where you could list if your parents had previously worked there, so i didnt have a spot to fill it out. also, the essays are part of the comon application, so theres no essay where i need to write about why i want to attend Washington University. should i contact them and let them know that my dad used to work there. i told my alumni interviewer, but im not sure if he mentioned that on my evaluation.

did you live in SL when your dad worked there? That’s really important to get across, especially if you have friends and relatives still living there.

I wouldn’t rely on the alum interviewer.
Have you submitted your common app yet? if not, add that to the additional info part.

i lived in St. Louis for a few years when my dad worked there. i used to go to his office all the time, so im pretty familiar with the school. i havent submitted my common application yet, and im applying early decision. i dont know where i could tell them that my dad used to work there for a few years on the common application.

You can always send in additional materials. Both my daughters sent resumes along with other required information. Add a brief note stating that your dad worked at Wash U and those fond memories are a factor in your choosing to apply early decision. Given that the deadline is tomorrow, you can provide this information via email to your admission processor. There is a link to contact your admissions officer on the wustl.edu website.

There is an “additional information” page at the end - you can write anything you want there.
