I got my scores back from my first SAT with no prep, and I got a 670 M 520 CR 620 W 9 essay, and I wanted to retake to bump my CR score up because most college solely look at your M + CR scores. However, my dad says that my score wouldn’t improve that much, and I told him that it could improve a TON and that I’ve been studying, but he still said no… What do I do? I can’t explain to colleges “my dad wouldn’t let me retake it”!!! I just want to go to a state school… What can I do!!! Thanks!

Your dad is mean, but 1860 is pretty good if you are trying to get into like NC State or UNC. I’m assuming you are from NC by your username.

Can you pay and take it yourself? Possibly complicated by needing a credit card. But your dad might be willing to do it if you hand him the cash.

Tell him you will do chores or something if he lets you take it.

Why don’t you pay for it yourself? When you buy something yourself, you appreciate it more anyways.

Spend the next 2-3 months studying for it. Take practice tests and SHOW him that your score has already improved. If he has to pay for it, offer some sort of service to him-- extra chores, washing his car, whatever.

You can’t expect him to just pay $50 if he doesn’t think you’ll do better. But if you can prove to him that you will, then he will be much more likely to do it.

I’ll offer to pay it! He tells me my scores are good, but I know I cab do better, and I’ll show him my improvements.

You have to put the scores in more context of what schools you are applying to and what merit aid you hope to get. Why does your dad say that your scores are good? Why do you say they are not yet high enough? If they were higher would you be able to consider other schools? Might you get merit scholarships by raising them? Show your ability to improve the scores and then have a discussion with your dad about what a higher SAT score would mean.
