Sending sunrise healing thoughts and hopes for sunny days ahead!

Lafalum, I’m sorry for your loss. I’m glad you posted. It really is a good opportunity to share what we know so that others might not have to go through it.

I was not aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. The problem is, many of them can be attributed to other things. I am slight in build and noticed my stomach was not quite as flat as it used to be. I figured I was getting a bit older and not working out, so my stomach was sticking out just a bit. I was going through lots of stress in my life with finances and family, so I figured my lack of appetite and feeling full without eating much was because of that. But it wasn’t. We have to be very vigilant with this disease. I went to my annual checkups, but when I was diagnosed, it was Stage 3c. Not so good, but not unusual.

So ladies, please don’t worry about being overly cautious if you have any of the symptoms. Read about it. Tell your doctor if you notice anything. For the time being, it’s the best we’ve got as far as early diagnosis.

What is the most reliable test for ovarian cancer? A blood test?

The blood test is, according to my gyn, dicey. It is dicey in that there are “alot” of false positives. My take is that I would prefer to have a false positive which is proven to be wrong…than a false negative which is ovarian cancer.

So, is there a more reliable way than a blood test to figure out if so somebody has ovarian cancer?

There’s promising research on using a routine Pap smear.

[Retooling Pap test to spot more kinds of cancer - San Jose Mercury News](<a href=“Retooling Pap test to spot more kinds of cancer – The Mercury News”>Retooling Pap test to spot more kinds of cancer – The Mercury News)

In response to the question about testing for ovarian, I’ll re-post my info from a few pages back:

Ovarian is 90% curable if it is caught early - the problem is it is rarely caught early. There is no reliable, easy diagnostic test. There are symptoms but they are vague and often resemble digestive conditions. It is not unusual for women to be mis-diagnosed for 6 months or more before finding out that they have ovarian cancer. (Gilda Radner was mis-diagnosed for 2 years). If you have some of the following symptoms for more than 2 weeks, ask your doctor for a trans-vaginal ultrasound AND a CA-125 blood test: feeling bloated or gassy, or have more frequent urination, back pain, nausea, indigestion, diarrhea or constipation, menstrual disorders or pain during intercourse. A CA-125 blood test by itself is highly inaccurate, but in conjunction with a good ultrasound and in the presence of symptoms, it can be a valuable diagnostic tool. A pap smear does NOT generally detect ovarian cancer, only cervical cancer. Early detection of ovarian cancer can save your life. As the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Foundation says, “Until there’s a test, awareness is best.”

(vballmom, that research on pap smears is promising, but even then it only detected 41% of ovarian tumors - and it’s not generally being used to test for ovarian yet. I wouldn’t want anyone reading this to assume that if she had a regular Pap smear and it came back negative that she has had a clean test for ovarian. Ellebud - used by itself, CA125 has a 50% accuracy rate.)

For those of us who wish we could “do” something for Sunriseast, I recommend making a donation to a foundation seeking either a cure for Ovarian Cancer or a reliable screening test. The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition and the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund are just two options.

(FYI, I lost my mom to ovarian 4 years ago, and my dad’s sister 10 years before her. I’ve had the genetic testing and it came up negative, but I try to stay up to date on the research anyway.)

^I like this idea. I’m going to send in a donation in honor of sunriseast.

Along the lines of ovarian cancer, fibroids are benign, correct? Could they ever be problematic/be an indicator of ovarian cancer? My mother has them (will get them removed next year) and my aunt just had hers removed (my aunt waited YEARS until they become very large). My mom is a nurse and I would ask her but I don’t want her to think I am worrying because then she won’t tell me things because she doesn’t want me to worry.

LaFalum84, thanks.

Vballmom, that would be a nice development.

CPUscientist3000, I don’t think fibroids and ovarian are related. Fibroids are inside the uterus and are benign (except that for some women they are painful as heck).

There are very few things you can do to reduce your risk of ovarian. Generally, the fewer times you ovulate, the lower your risk. So having a lot of kids and breastfeeding them, or taking birth control pills both lower your risk. So does starting menstruation late or early menopause - but those aren’t things you can control. Maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking are also helpful. For those at high risk, removal of the ovaries greatly reduces the risk. (I’m debating having mine removed, but that comes with its own set of complications). I think the evidence on whether hormone therapy at/after menopause causes ovarian is mixed.

Sometimes I find the tremendous amount of attention paid to breast cancer to be frustrating. I greatly admire the strides that have been made in treating it, and I know it’s the most frequent female cancer. But at this point breast cancer is 80% or better “curable” and it is still the ONLY female cancer anyone wants to talk about.

Ovarian, on the other hand, has about a 35% survival rate if it’s already progressed to stage III - and most of the time it’s discovered it’s at stage III or IV. A reliable test to find it at stage I or II would literally save more than ten thousand lives every year. But it seems all the publicity and money goes to the pink ribbons.

http://espn.go.com/espnw/8707377/disease-deadly-difficult-detect

Thank you for the information, Lafalum. I believe my grandmother had her ovaries (one or both, not sure if you can get only one out??) removed.

As a person with a chronic illness I understand your frustration. The most advertisement I have seen is breast cancer, then pancreatic cancer commercials sponsored by the Lustgarten foundation, followed by testicular cancer. I wish they talked about more types of cancers (and illnesses in general). Sometimes I feel marginalized.
